About the Author

Peter Arenstam was born on a farm in western Massachusetts but grew up on the coast in historic Plymouth. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and apprenticed at the Maine Maritime Museum where he became an instructor and boat builder. Currently, Peter manages the Maritime Artisans at Plimoth Plantation where he oversees the reproduction ship Mayflower II. His writings include numerous magazine articles on nautical history and the children’s book Felix and His Mayflower II Adventures. Peter lives near the ocean in Plymouth with his wife Susan and their two daughters, Hannah and Abby.

Karen Busch Holman left the big city of New York for a quieter life in New Hampshire, but with two sons, a pair of mice, two housecats, a retired racehorse, and a house filled with artwork projects underway, it’s hardly quiet!
Karen’s earlier work was featured in G is for Granite: A New Hampshire Alphabet (Sleeping Bear Press) and its accompanying number book, Primary Numbers. Her work can be seen on the New Hampshire Heirloom Birth Certificate and throughout the state in support of the Arts Council. Karen works in several mediums, such as pen and ink, oil, pastel, and watercolor, and we hear that she isn’t quite as afraid of mice as she used to be.

This is a very well written children's book that also provides a wonderful introductory history of Massachusetts. My 4 year old daughter recieved this book as a Christmas present and she loves it. Reminds me of EB White's genre of stories, e.g., Trumpeter Swan. The animal characters really come to life and have great personality thanks to the author's writing. As a mom I have appreciated that this is a well crafted tale, no violence, just a beautiful story. My daughter prentends to read this book to her stuffed animals and is already asking if there is another Nicholas book to read when this is done!

This it was a great book for kids that allowed them to be able to understand some of the history of Massachusetts through the eyes of a fine mouse character named Nicholas. Throughout the story Nicholas not only learns about the world around him but also makes a number of friends that will help him along the way. The author is done a great job in bringing the characters to life and allowing the reader to identify with the characters and what they're going through. I liked the fact that my kids could learn about a state where they've never gone through this book. Thus, not only are readers getting a enjoyable story, they are also being educated along the way.this is a well-written story that all will enjoy. They're wonderful illustrations throughout by the same illustrator that illustrated the Kathy -Jo Wargin stories of Mitt & Minn. You are drawn to the story even further through the beautiful pencil drawings in the story. I have to say that my kids and I really enjoyed the book and are looking forward to continuing to read the stories in this series as well.

I bought this for my nephew, who is a fourth grader living in Massachusetts. I read the series and I thought mapping the travels of Nicholas would be fun for him. I will probably purchase the other books (Maine, VT, and NH)

Very good narration and the author weaves the story, with the places and history throughout Massachusetts. It is interesting for adults as well as kids. My daughter is hooked and so are we.
