Great score...wish it were longer!,
This review is from: Nicholas Nickleby [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
I really liked the score just from hearing a clip of it played at the opening menu on the 'Nicholas Nickleby' DVD. Very pleasant, easy listening. It immediately caught my ear and I knew I had to buy the CD.I am a tad disappointed in the soundtrack though. I don't mind that the main theme repeats itself most of the tracks. My main problem is that the tracks are too short! There are 22 tracks in all, but at about 40 min. worth of total music, quite a few of the tracks hover at the minute mark, which seems rather silly. Only the first and last tracks are of substantial length. Although they seem to follow their appearance in the movie fairly accurately, I would not have minded if perhaps a 'suite' had appeared. I know it's unlikely, but I would dearly love an expanded release. Overall however, it's a good score.

Another gorgeous score from Portman,
This review is from: Nicholas Nickleby [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
When you first hear this, you'll know it's Rachel Portman. Reminiscent of "Cider House Rules" and "Legend of Bagger Vance", this score confirms that Portman is one of the best. Romantic, uplifting, melodic, nostalgic. She brings all of this to every score she writes, and if her different movie themes end up all sounding a bit similar... well, that's fine with me!

Excellent Work Rachel Portman!,

The score to this amazing movie mirrors the emotion and beauty of every scene. Ms. Portman can capture love, peace, suspense, and pity in a simple alteration of one tune in one track. Her interpretation of characters onto the music staff is incredibly vivid, leaving the listener's imagination to recreate some of the most memorable scenes in the movie. Especially the first track which is the opening of the movie. The music grabs you and holds you there until the last second of the last track. Fantastic heart-warming score! You must hear it!

I was greatly moved by this film; Nickleby's story is an inspiration for our times, and I thought it was well produced on screen. But I forgot about how much I liked the music until an Amazon review popped up accidentally in some web search or other. I rushed out to buy the CD, and thanks to the reviewers here, I was prepared for the fact that it's awfully short. Even so, the music is so charming and the main theme so sweetly uplifting, it's all forgivable. Thanks to Ms. Portman for a wonderful score, and yes, I'd love it if she would compose an entire suite.

This soundtrack is sheer poetry. The first time I saw this movie, I immediately noticed the soundtrack and loved it. Miss Portman has written several stunning scores, but I believe this is the most emotionally stirring one for me. A definate reccomendation

After having enjoyed the magnificent film version of "Nicholas Nickleby" both in the cinemas and after purchasing it on DVD I found myself totally in love with its truly wonderful musical score and I just knew I had to purchase it on CD to enjoy it in its own right. It's a decision I most certainly have never regretted. This truly beautiful musical score by the multi talented Rachel Portman has me alternately smiling, crying and being uplifted by its fantastic combination of instruments and general mood which ranges from sombre, ie "smike dies", track 19 which is incredibly beautiful while being very sad, right through to the "end credits", track 22 which is nothing short of joyous in its upbeat tone which almost seems to promise new hope for a better future. You can follow the storyline of the film through the 22 tracks on the CD and it expertly conveys the message of all works by Charles Dickens that while there can be great darkness in the world and in our day to day existence there can also be great joy and common decency in people to be had as well. I collect film movie scores but rarely has one affected me as much as this one. The quality of the recording on this CD is also first rate and I highly recommend it to all lovers of uplifting and emotionally charged film music. Buy it now as a perfect companion piece to the DVD of this very special film. It most certainly is the "very definition of perfection"!!

About three or four years ago during the Christmas season, I was switching TV channels on a Sunday afternoon when I happen to catch the beginning of the movie Nicholas Nickleby. The musical score just swept me away. The music was composed by British female composer Rachel Portman. It's beautiful ,lively melody has a way of leaving one feeling uplifted with a joyful heart. Some parts of the musical score is like a delightful folk dance. Rachel Portman's theme music from Nicholas Nickleby is one of the best I ever heard as well as John Barry's John Dunbar Theme from Dances with Wolves. If you are feeling the "blues" or feel dishearten about life, this is the music to listen to.

A musical poem...,

From the "Main Titles", I entered another world, a musical poem. "Nicholas Nickleby" has not been released here, but listening to every emotional, captivating piece of Ms. Portman's composition, (and having read the book), I may know what happens in every one and also describe the feelings involved, which fill my soul.Thank you!

Actually can't stop listening...,
This review is from: Nicholas Nickleby [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
My wife and I saw this movie in the theater several years ago (before we had kids) and the soundtrack really stuck with us. We've rented it several times since, and decided to buy it. I don't know why we hadn't thought of it before.
The music is infectious, and we play it all the time. It's a particularly good soundtrack for yard work. I would very highly recommend this CD (and the movie too). One of out best purchases. (I could have done with a different cover photo, but what are you going to do? I jjust turned it inside-out).

The main theme on this CD is pretty much found in every single track. While it is a GREAT theme, towards the end of the Soundtrack, the listener becomes a bit fatigued with the overjoyous 19th century life and adventures story. Still, good though
