Product Description

Product Description

The Nicholson hobby file set is an assortment of 6 files in a variety of shapes that are 5-1/2" long and have double-cut Swiss pattern teeth for a range of home or shop uses. The Swiss pattern teeth are double-cut for rapid material removal, with high precision for work on delicate or intricate parts. The built-in handle of each file is round and knurled for a secure grip. The set comes in a vinyl pouch for storage.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

I did just pick these up so I don't have a worthwhile opinion yet...

I'm posting this just to let you know what the cut is on these since I wasn't able to find it online. Since these are Swiss Pattern files, the cut is #2 on a scale of 00,0,1,2,3,4,5,6. With #00 being very coarse, #0 coarse, #2 considered fine and #6 super fine.

Initial thoughts are that this hobby set aren't as nicely manufactured as my Nicholson X.F. needle files. The Round file is more blunt and thicker as is the Square on the hobby set. Based on the other reviews, I'm hoping they will last a good long while as they are fine cut and I will just be using them for finish filing and not doing any serious removal of material.

This assortment of needle files is of excellent quality and craftsmanship. They are single cut with nice sharp ridges and made from a durable tool steel. The six files provide the right shape for any situation and they come in a convenient little pouch. They will leave a nice smooth finish on whatever it is you are filing. I would recommend having a good brush for clearing away the material that inevitably will get built up between the ridges when filing. Also the tangs are good enough to be used as is for light hobby work, but for anything that requires more force, a handle is also recommended. These files are quite small so get a handle that is suited to their size since a regular handle will dwarf them in diameter and possibly make them harder to use in tight places.

I was looking for a set of needle files with quality somewhere in between very expensive U.S.-made Swiss-pattern files and Chinese junk. This set fits in there, I guess. These are pretty good quality. They may be among the better Chinese needle files I've seen, but they're still just that - Chinese needle files. As such, they're way overpriced. You're probably better off saving up for a set of really nice files or just looking around for a set of cheaper Chinese files of acceptable quality. Additionally, the storage pouch which came with the files bears no resembance to the pouch pictured here, and is absolute junk.

I have had a set of these for many years along with several other brands sets. These files out cut all others on nearly any material. Only my diamond files out cut them but not as smoothly and they are not as durable. (the diamonds crush and come un-bonded). I just wish I could afford the big Nicholson set. I consider these as a "must have" in my tool kit. I also own some loose Nicholson files in larger sizes; these too beat the competition.

I have misplaced two files now and so am ordering a new set.

I purchased this set of files for metal work I do in my home workshop. The set contains the following files:

-- flat
-- half round
-- equalizer
-- square
-- round
-- triange

All in a plastic pouch. The pouch is light weight and probably will not go the distance. The files are high quality and I have been very pleased with their performance in my workshop..

I wouldn't give it a one star. There not Nicholson files read the fine print on the package. Black Diamond, Cooper hand tools, which are cheep and the package doesn't even look like what is shown. I don't remember what I paid close to $30 and that was for Nicholson not for some off the wall product.

These are not typical Nicholson material. Soft and wear out quickly like other imported files. Will not buy again and don't recommend.

I couldn`t understand how domestic files could be so inexpensive. It`s because they aren`t domestic- they`re Chinese. Hopefully the quality ispection is good, but I`m not holding my breath. If they wear out post haste, I guess it`s back to Grobet.
