Caveat Mandolinor!! This has NO mando tab!!,
By Roland du Chanson "El Martillo" (Matamoros, Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nickel Creek: Transcribed Scores (Guitar Recorded Version) (Paperback)
This is good and useful if you play guitar but rather less so for the mandocrucians out there. While the standard notation for all instruments is here, only guitar tab is given. Upshot: If you want to play what Thile is doing, you'll have to sit down and note-by-note transfer the score to mando tab. This only applies to hacks like me who prefer tab to notation wherever possible. True musicians, please disregard.

Loved the Nickle Creek book,

I like the book alot. The tabs are extremly accurate if not perfect. I can't read musical notation that well, but I would assume the notes are as close as the tabs.Defiatly worth the money. If you play guitar you'll need to know some fingerstyle.

From the songs I've been through, this songbook is very much on point (I'd purchased this particularly interested in Chris Thile's solos). The rhythms, though they're well marked, are hard to fully get from the scores unless you play along to the original tracks in my opinion. No tab for mando so you'll need to know how to read music, though guitar tabs are given. Overall, you get exactly what's advertised. Be ready to put the time in to cinch these down! There are a lot of nuances I didn't notice listening until I read the music. Thile is not a simple player, and neither are his solos.I'm dropping one star because when this was shipped, it came with a random book on small-scale farming that weighed much more than this book. The heck? I was trying to think it was to mess with the cost of shipping, but I'm still lost on that one. |
