I don't understand why some parents would slam this software... perhaps they didn't even take the time to review it in detail with their kids... sure there are games in there, (to help practise typing skills), but if you use the "Typing tournament" section there is a very well thought out graduated set of typing lessons that methodically introduces children to the various keys, giving them instruction on correct fingering, and walking them through drills to build their proficiency. What more could you ask for? Plus my 9 year old son loves it and can't wait to do another lesson when he gets home from school. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars SpongeBob making typing fun!, October 1, 2007

This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants Typing (CD-ROM)
This learn to type product suits my 10 year old for his only interest is to play video games. SpongeBob combines video game and the kid's natural competitiveness to motivate in learning a task that is basically boring. It really makes learning fun.

This product is decent. My eight year old and his friends had a blast playing all the different typing games with their favorite characters. Installation and navigation through the program was easy. What it doesn't contain are the basics...the actual teaching of hand position and repetative learning of keystrokes by finger, that we all remember from typing class (jfjfjf kdkdkd lslsls etc. to learn where the keys are and which finger types them). There is one game that shows hand position, but it's not visually very clear, at least to me. I've kind of put this game away until we get a 'standard' typing tutor to teach him these basics first. Otherwise I feel that he is being encouraged to get really good at the hunt-and-peck method. It's too bad too, the game is really fun. It would be great for a child that already knows the basics and wants to practice in a game environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Cool!, February 27, 2008

This software is awesome for kids who really want to learn to type or parents looking for help teaching their kids. It makes learning fun and easy. My son and I both love it and he was faster and more accurate after the first lesson. One recommendation, don't let your kids skip ahead to the games that are above their skill level because, if their like mine, it will just cause frustration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spongebob Typing program is a great one!, January 9, 2008
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants Typing (CD-ROM)
When I first opened this program, I was afraid it may be too hard for a beginning typist. Fortunately, once I worked through it, I found where the beginning skills practice was located. There are several levels available and even though some levels are pretty advanced, my 7 year old son enjoyed watching me use my typing skills to attempt to get a high score. I think it motivated him to try to develop his skills. I would recommend this product to others because all children in this day and time need to learn proper typing skills and since Spongebob is such a popular character, it is great for motivation!

My 9 year old son really likes to learn typing with this program. There are two modes. One teaches typing step by step and the other is just for fun. It is best if they do the step by step first so they learn all the letters. If they don't, they can still play the games, but it is a little more difficult. Great program for kids since today everyone needs to learn keyboarding!

SpongeBob Squarepants Typing 2008
My six year old grandson found this interesting, but it didn't teach him the fundamentals he needed to follow along with the program. We will try it later, now he is doing well in Mavis Beacon set to its lowest lever (8 year old) and really likes working on it every day. (Older grandkids started with the Mavis Beacon program and then went to the Sponge Bob for a change - loved it and did well. So I think its an option for a child with some basis typing practice and knowledge of hand position, etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun but not really updated, March 30, 2008

I would be wary and not pay too much for this product. Even though it is 2008, it seems like the programmers just rushed to get something to market and didn't bother to have it fully compatible. I have a Mac and was perturbed by the fact that it ran under a Classic environment. OS X has been out for how long? Then why would anyone create software to fit a MAC OS that has been obsolete for the last 8 years!!!

I felt like I overpaid for this at 10 bucks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this if you have Vista, February 5, 2009
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants Typing (CD-ROM)
This product will not install on Vista even though the box states "Vista Compatible" in three places. I wasted a hour trying to get this to install and to get technical support. Now I have to return it. The .exe file shows a 1999 date; this software is ancient. There is absolutely no technical support from The Learning Company or Encore or Riverdeep (apparently a Chinese company). Do not buy this for a new computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a boring activity fun, February 19, 2008
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants Typing (CD-ROM)
With this product I was finally able to get my daughter to learn to type.
It makes a boring and tedious subject fun to learn.
