Book Description

Niki Turner has finally arrived. Her career as a Software Engineer is soaring--she has just been offered the company's most sought after account, Helitronics. Life would be perfect, if she could stop her roommate from playing matchmaker.

Then Kyle Jacobs mysteriously re-enters her life. As painful memories resurface, his presence turns her life upside down and threatens to waylay her career. She must find a way to work with him--after all, he's the helicopter flight consultant for the new flight control system she's coding.

Can she forget the past and see him as the new man he has become? Or will her resentment keep her from finding what she has always been searching for?

This contemporary Christian romance novel is an upbeat and compelling story set in the Phoenix Metro Area. Karen Baney shows a new side to her writing with great wit and banter between the main characters. Inspired by her love of romance and of computers, this story takes readers on a journey filled with laughter and tears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Christian Contemporary December 13, 2011
Format:Paperback
Have you ever been hurt by someone in the past and even though they seem like they might have changed, you struggle with letting go of the hurt and your opinion on the way that person used to be? I know I have. Nickels is story about Niki, a young software engineer that just scored her dream account at Helitronics. The hard part is she will directly be working with Kyle Jacobs, a friend from the past that she isn't sure she should trust. And with all the loss she's had in her life she can't take any chances on a broken heart.

Niki's character is so dynamic!! She is struggling with forgiving the past and moving forward and she is very lost, which makes this character so realistic and interesting. She needs healing and she needs to trust in love again. Kyle has been through some serious tough situations also, but in the process has found God and is hoping that Niki will see his new attitude and personality as appealing!

The whole story is primarily focused on Niki and Kyle completing this computer code for Helitronics by a certain deadline. The boss keeps changing the deadline and seems to have it out for destroying Niki. You can tell Baney knows what she is talking about when describing the software aspect of the story.

Nickels is fast-moving, thought provoking, spiritual, sweet romantic, full of God's restoration and healing, forgiveness, and a match-making friend making this story one amazing Christian Contemporary novel.

I have read all of Karen Baney's historical novels and loved them but I was little nervous to see if she could pull off doing both historical and contemporary! I had nothing to worry about, Nickels was truly amazing!! I will keep reading whatever genre Baney decides to write!!

Disclosure: I received a free copy of Nickels in exchange for my personal and honest opinion. All opinions are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nickels by Karen Baney March 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I wasn't at all sure of what to expect from this book so my mind was pretty open and I had no expectations going in. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end! I am looking forward to reading more by Karen Baney, and I would recommend her books to anyone who wants a thought provoking read.

There is a little bit of everything in this book, and it kept me interested from start to finish. The characters are well thought out, and I really enjoyed the interaction between them. I found myself laughing and crying and rooting for them at different points. I think we all have a best friend like the lady in this book, and if we don't, we wish we did!

Most of all the struggles experienced by the main character was one that I think we all identify with on some level. Although we may not be in the type of industry she is, we've all had things hit us from left field in our jobs. We may not have dealt with the issues she had to deal with in relation to her *man*, but we've felt her pain on some level. We may not struggle with our faith in the same way, but we've all faced the loss of it at some point or other. This story makes you realize that others have the same problems and reminds us all that we are not alone.

Niki has never quite recovered from the many losses in her past. Friend Marcy tries too hard to marry her off, while Niki seeks only success and approbation for her undoubted computing skills. Meanwhile Kyle, suffering his own losses, prays for second chances without realizing what he might find. This story starts slowly, setting up characters and situations, but finds its speed when estranged friends finally fall into step with each other.

Author Karen Baney creates an interesting mix of close friends keeping distant secrets in her Christian romance, Nickels, and it's enjoyable to find a female protagonist familiar with computers. The background is shaped by 9/11 and the foreground by software programming, but wars of the mind replace those of gun and a quiet undercurrent of faith grows strong, offering anguish or relief.

The race to complete computer code on time feels familiar to me as a former software engineer. The longer race to heal wounds is carefully steered through interesting questions of God's care and why he allows those wounds to happen. The whole is a sweet romance with all the right hurdles to cross, wise lessons in faith, great scenery, Arizona sunshine, computer programmers, and even a game of Taboo. In this pleasing romance, wounds can be healed, love can grow, and holes in lives are gracefully filled by their creator.

Disclosure: I received a free eARC of this novel from the WoMen's Literary Café in exchange for an honest review.
