It is terribly disappointing to buy a book of directions and not have them work!!

Maybe your next book could be one with matching outfits for girl and doll.

Let me start by saying that I am a real Nicky Epstein fan...of her designs..not her directions.. I own every book she has written. There are many, many errors in them.
So I bought this book and started with the Royal Princess pattern. I got through it...and started to join the pieces together following the directions...When you try to follow the directions, joining the top to the yoke, there is a 25% difference in the size of the two armholes...I wrote to Ms. Epstein on her Blog and on Ravelry and to the publisher...no reply...
I also wrote and asked where to find the slip the doll is shown wearing since the holes in the crocheting show the body..no reply...
So I knitted a slip. No where in the book could I find a source for the accessories shown.
None of these patterns are shown on an American Girl doll. Those dolls have cloth bodies. They are shown on Madame Alexander dolls that do not...patterns must be altered a lot to fit the American Girl dolls which may be 18" tall but have different body proportions.
I also bought the Knit for Dolls book but have not yet made any of those patterns.
It is terribly disappointing to buy a book of directions and not have them work!! What are we paying for??

Many of the patterns have no explanations how to do stitches. I know how to crochet but many of patterns don't make sense. Not happy with book.

As always, Nicky Epstein outdoes herself with the originality of the designs. Based only on the appearance of the darling outfits, I would give this book a 5. BUT except for a bathrobe, blankie, and outerwear*, very few of the outfits are suitable, if made per instructions, for soft-body dolls. Most outfits are sleeveless, many with only shoulder straps on the bodice and some have wide necklines, one neckline plunges down the back. Even if you have a soft-body doll with all vinyl arms and legs, the dresses with straps and wide necklines will still show the soft body. *If your soft-body doll has the partial vinyl arms I am unsure if most of the slender-looking sleeves of the outwear would fit over the soft part of the arms. I am disappointed because it seems to me that most of the outfits exclude use for the soft-body dolls. It is for this broad exclusion that I gave the book a 3. I plan on "tweaking" some of the outfits - example: The long dress shown on the cover will be given a different bodice (maybe the bodice of the blue and white dress shown beside it on the cover). Because I do love the darling clothes, I will be saving up to buy an all-vinyl-body doll - that will be much easier than trying to redesign the bodices on the dresses! I have made many of the Barbie knit and crochet outfits Nicky designed and the directions were easy to use, so I expect the same will be true for the directions for the 18" doll outfits. Except - the outfit on page 64 with the cowl neck tells you under "Finishing" to gather 1-1/2" of the center-front neckline and there is no opening down the back or side, so I'm wondering how the dress gets put on the doll. Maybe someone has made this dress and can enlighten me???

Very deceptive as the dolls on the front of this book appear to be American Girl dolls but are for Madame Alexander Favorite Friends that is not the same shape as the American Girls so most of the patterns will need some adjustments to fit the American Girls-Very disappointed and I should have read more reviews before putting it on my wish list

If you can crochet by seeing the photos, and copying, then you are in business. However, if you actually need a pattern...forget it. I'm on my 3rd pattern now and they patterns are riddled with mistake after mistake. I am an expert at crochet and thankfully can "make it work", but these truly are some of the worst written patterns I have encountered in a while. There is absolutely no way to make the items (at least the 3 I've done so far) by following what is written. Photos beautiful, designs great, patterns...awful!

Fortunately, I have been crocheting for over 40 years and have some grasp of the skill....this book would leave beginners in tears...horrible directions, many errors, and did not give the required stitch quantity at the end of each row to allow the crocheter to know whether or not they were on track...I finally gave up and used a sewing pattern for an 18 inch doll for dimensions and created my own pattern. Very disappointed. I think that it would be cheaper to just buy an 18 inch doll and use for a model. Cute ideas, but then, I could have just viewed the ideas on line and saved the money. Is there a way to give it 1/2 of a star just because the photos were nice?

Finally, crochet patterns that are stylish and modern! Kudos to Nicky Epstein for bringing crochet into the 21st century. With this book, crochet is now the Cinderella instead of the ugly stepsister at the ball.

A.G. dolls are all the rage at my house these days and I've been on the search to find lovely patterns for them. I hit the jackpot with this book. My daughter loves the looks of these outfits and accessories and I love the well-written and easy-to-follow patterns. There is an outfit for every occasion - from the playful to the glamorous. The design and fit is just spectacular. I plan to adjust the patterns and make some matching things for my daughter as well. That would be a great addition Ms. Epstein - hint, hint. Maybe your next book could be one with matching outfits for girl and doll.
