As a travelogue, its good, as a pattern book, not good, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Nicky Epstein Knitting in Tuscany (Hardcover)
I am not inclined to write reviews. And I have and like most of Nicky Epstein's books but after getting this copy yesterday, I was incredibly disappointed with the patterns in this book. I am keeping it only for the info on Italy because it is my favorite place in the world but this is not her best work, to put it kindly. Most of them are way too literal and the others look like she just phoned it in.

strike two...such a disappointment, May 17, 2009
This review is from: Nicky Epstein Knitting in Tuscany (Hardcover)
I must start by saying Nicky Epstein has been my favorite knitting designer. Her designs have always been imaginative..and even with all the errors I found as I went along (uncorrected by the publisher for the longest time) I still loved the books..and I own every one of them...Imagine my dismay with her last book...and now this latest one..If I want a guidebook on Italy, I will buy one. I want Nicky's designs printed correctly...The designs (few that there are) are dismally unexciting (and I understand have more errors)...same as the last book...Maybe she is using a ghost designer...I have never heard of that but I cannot otherwise explain why these designs (and in the Knitting On Top Of The World book) are boring and seem like repeats of past designs....so sad...

Fun Designs, Great Travel Guide, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Nicky Epstein Knitting in Tuscany (Hardcover)
This is a great little book with some fun designs. I plan on taking it to Italy with me this summer, against my husband's best wishes. I will be traveling to Florence and Siena, so the recommendations of restaurants, hotels and shops were very welcome. The photography is stunning. As for the designs, some may think that a few are "over the top", such as the Etruscan Pitcher and Abbondanza Wrap. However, there are some great sculptural pieces, like the Della Robbia Flower Pillows and the Wool Guild Wreath, which is the first project I will be making. (I saw the original in Florence and Nicky's version is a perfect replica. She definitely knows how to sculpt with wool.) For those looking for nice sweater patterns, the Siena Rooftop Sweater, Cypress Capelet and Carrara Marble Cardigan are beautiful and practical. I would wear them to work and I teach in an elementary school. For those looking for glamour, try Dante's Beatrice Shawl or the Bella Bride's Dress. WOW! Molto Bello! All in all an excellent book. I hope there are more in this travel series!
