MUST SEE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nico the Unicorn [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Many people say the scene where the pony dies is scary for little kids. For those of you worried, all it shows it the pony running around with many cuts. It never shows her die. Many people say that older kids won't enjoy it. I'm 14 and watch it at least once every day! Honest. I own a pony named after Nico, because she looks so simular to the star when he was born. If you haven't seen this movie then you should, you won't be sorry. It is about a boy with a dead father and a crippled leg who rescues a pony that gives birth to a unicorn. Younger kids will enjoy the story, while older kids will also relate to the star, Billy, played by Air Bud and Virginia's Run's Kevin Zegers. I said it before and I'll say it again: Nico The Unicorn is a must see!

I enjoyed this video so much. Second time around enjoyed it even more. What a wonderful story for young and old alike. I am a 68 year old woman and cannot tell you how much pleasure I received from watching this video. In fact I enjoyed it so much I am purchasing it for my grand daughter so we can watch it together when I visit her. Nico the Unicorn gave me much pleasure and I am sure Emily will also enjoy watching it with her family.

Wonderful movie, but younger kids would soon get bored,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nico the Unicorn [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a beautiful movie about a boy named Billy who saves a pony and soon gets rewarded with a unicorn. Soon, his secret gets out and "Nico" is not safe hiding at Billy's house anymore. Billy takes Nico up to Big Rock where Nico finds his real home. I think this movie is great for older kids and adults for younger kids would soon get bored with the movie. Although I didn't enjoy the part of the movie where the mountain lion killed Nico's mother, but in reality that's what would really happen. I saw that people were complaining that the scene should not have been put in because this was a "kid's movie." It's not, the movie was based on the book "Nico the unicorn" by Frank Sacks and that was a very big part of the story. But since I know how protective of their animal-loving children some people are, I will warn them about the scene. The mountain lion tries to kill Nico, but his mother tries to lead the mountain lion away. She gets many wounds and of course that's the part where you should cover up your little kids eyes so they are not haunted by this tragic scene.

Family Jewel,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nico the Unicorn [VHS] (VHS Tape)
After the huge disappointment of "The Little Unicorn", I was rather wary of picking up a "family" unicorn film, but this film proved truly pleasing to the heart. "Nico" not only has sympathetic characters, but gorgeous scenery, a striking unicorn, and a moving message. Billy Hastings is a young boy who has coped with not only the loss of his father, but a crippled leg from the accident that killed him. His heart, however, is completely whole and he proves this when he saves a poor battered circus pony from a cruel master. The pony, after being restored by Billy and his mother's kindness, gives birth to a baby unicorn. When the unicorn, Nico, grows into a gorgeous adult, his existence is soon discovered and released to the press by a group of greedy kids. When Billy resolves to take Nico up a mountain to freedom, both their lives are put on the line as the race for freedom begins. If you assume that there are some corny moments in the film, you'd be right. However, the corniness is actually minimum and the film is truly moving. One of my favorite parts was getting a glimpse into the unicorn's world, an achingly gorgeous paradise scene that I hadn't been expecting. All the actors, including the beautiful Anne Archer, do great jobs. Parents, as a few people have pointed out, there is a disturbing scene where Nico's sweet mother is fatally attacked by a mountain lion. A few have called this scene not very disturbing, but it certainly rattled me (even though I was expecting it) and I have no doubt kids could be bothered by it too. I was surprised by one person's comment that it's no big deal because all it shows is the pony with several cuts on her. Um, that's still disturbing, as the "cuts" were large wounds that the pony was bleeding profusely from; plus, it does show the mountain lion bite her hard at one point. I don't want to dissuade parents from letting kids see it by any means; just please watch with your kids. Recommended!

An older lady enjoyed it too!,

I am a 57 yr old lady, and I've enjoyed this movie several times on tv. Everyone else has said what the movie's about, but that its mostly for kids. If you're young at heart and enjoy a movie just for the sake of watching a movie and dont judge so hard, maybe you'll love it too like I have and will continue to everytime it comes on...well now I ordered the movie too.

Awesome Movie!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nico the Unicorn [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I reconmend this movie. It is worth watching. Little kids might be upset by the scene where Nico's mom dies, but it all takes place off screen, except for the fact that the pony runs around with many cuts on her. I have heard people say that older kids won't like the movie. Not true. I enjoyed every second of it! Because the movie is based on a twelve year old's life, older kids will relate to the movie more than younger kids, who will just enjoy the story. The actors are all amazing. Air Bud lovers will enjoy the fact that Kevin Zegers plays Billy. Horse lovers will enjoy Agusto(I did!). He plays Nico, and is a truly amazing actor! The movie is about Billy, a boy with a dead father and a crippled leg, who just moved to town with his mom. When he rescues a pony, Carolynn, a popular girl, and him help his pony give birth to a unicorn. A must see.

OK, OK, so i am not a kid, but i like unicorns. Doesnt have a strong plot, but has some interesting ideas about unicorns. Didnt have a lot of subplots, but it is good for kids. May not keep the interest of older kids and teenagers, but I liked it. The unicorn was beautiful.

Good movie, but lacked a strong plotline.,

I was introduced to this movie through Amazon's recommendations. Although I liked this movie, it lacked a strong plot line, but it at least had enough to keep me interested. A cripple boy buys a pony for cheap from a carnie like guy who just wanted a quick buck. He cleaned up the pony and it looked as good as new. Later on, it gave birth to another pony which they soon found out was a unicorn! After that, he tries hard to keep it a secret until a few bullies find out and alert the press. Then, the boy decides to run off and set him free. All in all, it was a good movie. It may not keep a child's attention very long, but for older children and adults, it would make a good family movie.

WARNING! Scary scene for younger viewers...,
By "halleysmomkaren" (Orange, CA USA) - See all my reviews

You can read the other reviews and get the storyline; what I wish I had known before I bought this movie is that there is a fairly graphic, bloody scene in which Nico's mother, the little boy's beloved pony, is killed by a mountain lion. My 5-year old, senstive, animal-loving daughter watched this movie a month ago and is still haunted, to the point of tears, day and night, by memories of this scene... As a parent, I feel very guilty for not prescreening this movie before showing it to my daughter - but I never imagined such an awful scene in a children's movie. She still enjoys the story and wants to watch the movie, oddly enough, but we have to fast-forward past a large section of it every time.
