Editorial Reviews

2009 debut album from this female-fronted Rock trio. Singer Aja Volkman's soaring vocals deliver the full impact of her powerful lyrical message. Driven by guitarist Rich Koehler's alternately crunching riffs and Funk-fueled leads and drummer Don Epand's explosive percussive attack, the experience of listening to Nico Vega defies easy categorization, not too distant from the operatic stadium Rock sound of Evanescence yet sharing many of the darker melodic undertones of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Produced by Linda Perry.

I don't usually take time to write reviews, but this band deserves some credit. I was introduced to them through their song "Beast" from the Bioshock Infinite trailer. I listened to some songs on youtube and quickly decided I had to own this album.

I've had it for about a week now and I've been listening to it non-stop. It's been stuck in my head in between every listen. It's so good!

Among my favorites are Gravity, Burn Burn, Million Years and of course Beast. They show incredible versatility and there is a lot of variety in their songs. There's something for everyone. Give it a listen and see for yourself.

I wish I could give 7 stars. This CD is just that much better than most real five star CDs. Nico Vega's first album just takes you over, much of it on the strength of Aja Volkman's vocals. Remember that name. She could carry a mediocre group with her voice alone, but her bandmates are far from mediocre. Great tunes reflecting pretty much any genre of music you want, incredible performances, and one of the most enchanting vocalists I've ever heard. What more do you need? If you can see them live, do not hesitate. If you can't see them, you need this cd. I started to list my favorites here but the list became too long. I have to say that I like their earlier version of "Beast," but the one here is great too. I love it that you cannot type Nico Vega. It's been a long time since I've heard a band this versatile. Full disclosure: I do not like slow songs, ballady type things, I just don't. But "Wooden Dolls" gives me the chills, and if they tried to torture me by playing "Iron Man" a thousand times in a row, I would just smile.

Saw these guys were coming to town for a show so I first checked them out online and new I had to buy the songs. It made for an awesome show having already listened to them so much. I check out a lot of new bands and these guys really stand apart. I too had jaw dropping moments listening to the vocals. Songs also have great staying power and grow on you. Great for working out -- so much so sometimes I start listening and feel like jaming along with a good workout or run, also great for driving. One of those gems you feel lucky to have stumbled across before they go huge. Great CD to share with others, they will be just as blown away and if not they're fools!

This band really rocks. Whatever your mood, there is a song on this album for you. You can really feel the passion coming from every member of this band. To create such a full sound with only three members is not an easy task, but this band surpasses that mark with ease. I have listened to this album many times over, always from beginning to end and it never gets old.

I originally heard Nico Vega a few tracks at a time, usually from web videos of live/acoustic performances. I will say the full length is more gritty, angry and boot-stomping than those web videos, despite the fact that nearly half the album's tracks are the same songs. Don't get me wrong, there has always been a raw edge to the Nico Vega sound, but it was difficult at first to make the jump from those bathroom, rooftop, kitchen videos of Aja and guitarist Rick giving the honest to acoustic goodness treatment to tracks like 'Wooden Dolls' and 'Medicine Man' on to the aggressive, hard rock/metal kissed likes of 'Million Years' on the full length. By the time the last track rolls around though (Beast, which lives up to the name), a journey and a realization have occurred: These guys want it, they feel it, from the gentleness to the "I'm gonna bite your face"-ness. And Aja shouldn't be relegated to the gal-who-sits-on-the-toilet-singing-in-her-pajamas category, however beautiful she makes it look and sound. They borrow from one, from all, and it's definitely, seemingly, coming together. I wish Nico Vega all the best, albeit selfishly, because I want more!

In an era of Internet radio, I won't buy an entire album unless I feel like the group is exceptional. It's almost a symbolic gesture to tell the artist and other fans that I think the group truly shines above the rest. Each member of Nico Vega is extremely talented and the confluence of their individual talents is a diverse, high-energy, and unique sound that will hopefully build enough momentum to carry them through several more albums and headlining tours. I've seen Nico Vega in concert twice and their live performance confirmed and exceeded their great work in the studio. As an added note, they were the most inexpensive tickets I have purchased in 17 years of concert-going. This combined with the band's interaction with the audience proves that they are really committed to their fans. In the unlikely chance that they check out their own fan reviews: Thank you Aja, Rich, Dan, and Jamila. Thank you for your dedication to great music and please keep coming back to Colorado. (RXP 103.9 in Colorado Springs introduced me to your music)

My favorite tracks (in order from #1 to #4): Rabbit in the Bag, So so Fresh, Gravity, Wooden Dolls,

I rarely write reviews. But this band has moved me to say that they deserve far more attention than they get. Aja, the lead singer, has a wonderful, unique and sexy voice. She's intense, she doesn't hold back. The music is fierce and passionate. I've only had this release for two hours and I'm totally in love with them. If you appreciate great lyrics, great musicians, great vocals, and a great album... Buy this. It won't disappoint!
