A wonderful new book from the Avon True Romance series.,
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
It's 1810, and sixteen-year-old orphan Nicola Sparks has just finished her schooling at a young ladies' academy. Now she's ready for her first London season. In fact, she's already picked the young man she hopes will ask her to marry him: Lord Sebastian Bartholomew, a viscount who will inherit his father's title of earl. Nicola is invited to stay with the Bartholomews, and eagerly accepts the invitation. And it seems like a dream come true when Lord Sebastian proposes marriage. But Nathaniel Sheridan, the infuriating older brother of Nicola's best friend, Eleanor, causes Nicola to question Lord Sebastian's true motives in asking her to marry him. Soon Nicola begins to wonder if it's really Lord Sebastian she loves, and not someone she's been overlooking all along. I highly recommend this new book from the Avon True Romance series. Meg Cabot is a wonderful author of contemporary and supernatural stories for teens, and I'm happy to say she's just as good at writing a historical romance for young adults.

A great historical romance,
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
Sixteen-year-old Nicola Sparks, an orphan after her parents both drowned in an accident, is now finally ready for her first London Season. There is one thing that Nicola doesn't have to worry about though, and that is chosing a husband. After attracting the Viscount Lord Sebastian Bartholomew's attention at one of her school performances, she has been invited to his house, and Nicola gets her dream, he has proposed to her. Unfortunately, besides poetry, the two have little conversation, but Nicola is still very sure that this marriage was meant to happen, until the young infruiating Nathaniel Sheridan, the brother of Eleanor, Nicola's best friend, begins questioning why the Viscount truly wants to marry Nicola. Nicola is sure Nathaniel is just saying nonsense, until she begins to pick the pieces of the puzzle up by herself. Soon it isn't just a question of the Viscount's integrity, but who Nicola truly loves as well. This was another wonderful addition to the Avon True Romance series. Meg Cabot has always been a wonderful romance writer for teens and adults and this book is no exception.

It's the year 1810, and Nicola Sparks, has just graduated from Madame Vieuxvincent's. She's now moving in with the Bartholomew's to get ready for her first London Season. The Bartholomew's are awfully kind to her, and Nicola is in love with the God (aka Lord Sebastian Bartholomew), though he doesn't know it, at least that's what Nicola thinks. But suddenly she is engaged to the God, and planning their wedding. Until she discovers that he doesn't really love her, he just wants to get her to sell Beckwell Abby, a home that her father left her. Soon she realizes she was wrong about who loved her, and soon finds herself falling for someone else. Someone she's known for a very long time.Meg Cabot has another hit with "Nicola and the Viscount." Her characters are strong and original, and the main plot mixes both mystery and romance into one. A must have for all fans of Meg Cabot, romance, or mystery.

Best Book in the Avon True Romance Series,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
"Nicola and the Viscount" is the perfect romance because it's believable! None of this "She was so utterly and devastatingly gorgeous that men fell into states of dilerium after being blinded by her radiance...," junk that begins the cliche romances that litter bookstore shelves. I loved this book because the heroine is a real girl - she's not perfect. The things Nicola says are things me and my friends would say. For example, Nicola insists Lord Bartholemew (sp?) is everything that is wonderful and great... never mind that she's never really talked to him before! I mean, honestly, don't most girls have infatuations with some guy they really don't know, and they idolize this guy in hopes that what's inside the head looks as good as what's on the face...Nicola is a very lovable heroine!

Nicola and the Viscount,
By Priscilla Stafford (Yokohama, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
The year is 1810 in the city of London. Sixteen-year-old orphan Nicola Sparks has just finished her schooling at a young lady's academy. She's ready for her first London Season and though other young girls would be searching for a husband, Nicola's not worried. She has already decided she will marry the young and handsome viscount, Lord Sebastian Bartholomew. She loves poetry, he loves poetry. And he seems to be as much in lover with her as she is with him. So Nicola feels everything is going well when Lord Sebastian proposes to her. That is, until Nathaniel Sheridan, Nicola's best friend's brother, questions the viscount's character and motivation in marrying her. Nicola is convinced though that Nathaniel is just making pointless accusations. But, what if Nathaniel is right, and Lord Sebastian has an ulterior motive for marrying her? It's up to Nicola is piece together the facts and find the truth, and to also search her heart to figure out who she really is in love with... The fifth book of the series, "Nicola and the Viscount" is an Avon True Romance for teenage girls. And even though this book is first and foremost a romance novel, there is plenty of intrigue, humor, and excitement to entertain a variety of teens. Nicola is a very interesting character, far from being perfect. I thought that Meg Cabot made Nicola's fascination and infatuation with the viscount very realistic. It's very often that many young woman mistake love with a physical attraction. Yes, Lord Sebastian was handsome but it was not until later on that Nicola truly poses the important questions. Besides his physical appearance, what dis she REALLY love about him? As we go through the book, we can see a change come through Nicola as she realizes that the truth is that she and the viscount had very little in common. Then there's Nathaniel who's such a tease and much like an annoying brother, but later on Nicola comes to realize that they just might be perfect for each other. The ending is so sweet and I assure you that you'll like it! If all the other Avon True Romance novels for teens are anything like "Nicola and the Viscount", I'm definitely picking up another in the series! So far, "Catherine and the Pirate" and "Victoria and the Rogue" are my favorites.

Wonderful!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is a great read. It is perfect for teenage girls. The wonderful, witty, sarcastic writing style of Meg Cabot brings the well developed charecters to life. Nicola Sparks dreams of nothing but having the 'God' (Lord Sebastian Bartholomew) propose to her. She is the typical 16 year old girl. Idealistic, excitable, and seeems to have a wonderful fashion sense that brings much humor to the book. Especially Nicola's thought on the daily attire of her not so cherised cousin, Harold, whom she nicknamed 'Milksop'. Nathaniel Sheridan is... very... surprising. Some of the things he does in the story are very sudden unexpected, and some of them even made me embarassed for him. The witty hater of poetry casts doubts on Nicola's engagement to Lord Sebastian and infuriates Nicola to no end with his remarks and critisism. Nicola is annoyed by Nathaniel's doubts on Lord Sebastian and sets out to prove him wrong. In the process, she discovers a few things that change her mind about her engagement and Nathaniel... It is a wonderful read. I highly recommend it to any fans of Meg Cabot. Craftily written, it combines romance, humor, mystery, and even a little bit of action and adventure in one intriguing story that will hold you till the end. Very sweet ending. The ending I must admit, left me kind of hanging. It made me wonder what would happen next. It is only probably because I enjoyed it very much. Highly recommended.

I loved Nicola and the Viscount. Meg Cabot did a great job through and through. Nicola Sparks is a spunky orphan engaged to a god, Lord Sebastian. Lord Sebastian is very handsome and Nicola has dreamed of marrying him for so long, now she is going to !! Then a very good friend, Nathaniel Sheridan, begins to hint to Nicola that Lord Sebastian is not the perfect god she always dreamt he would be.After a horrying discovery, Nicola is unsure of what to do. Marry Lord Sebastian? Break the engagement? Run away? You must read this book to find out, its a great addition to Avon Romance!

A wonderful historical romance by Meg Cabot,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
Nicola Sparks is a sixteen-year-old orphan. She has only two living relatives, whom she preferably nicknames the Grouser, and his son, the Milksop. When her lessons with Madame Vieuxvincent are done, she is free to live anywhere. Her friend's family, the Bartholomews, invite Nicola to their home, and she accepts. She has always admired Lord Sebastian Bartholomew, whom she titles "the God," and this gives her a chance to be in his company often. One day he proposes marriage to her, and she accepts. Nicola has doubts when she finds evidence of a possible scandal. Does Lord Sebastian truly love her, or does he want to marry Nicola as part of a further plan? This was a great Avon True Romance, and it has a different plot than most of the others. I love Meg Cabot's books, and this one was no exception. However, I will note, that this is not like The Princess Diaries. But if you enjoy reading historical romance novels, you will appreciate this one.

I loved Nicola and the viscount! it was totally believable and enjoyable. It all starts when Nicola Sparks, an orphan, goes to live with the Bartolomew's. SHe already has her heart set on Lord Sebastian Bartolomew, for whom she wants to marry. But Nathaniel Sheridan, her friend Eleanor's elder brother, warns her that Lord Sebastian is not all he seems. So Nicola does a little investigating. When her uncle, the Grouser (as Nicola and Eleanor call him), wants to run a train through her home, the abbey, and his son, The Milkstop (as Nicola and Eleanor call him) offers a proposal of marriage to Nicola. Then Nicola searches around Lord Sebastian's dad's desk and finds more papers about the railway. Will she marry Lord Sebastian, her idea of the GOD, and let the railway pass or follow her heart? Read the book to find out! I highly recommend it! If you love Meg Cabot or the Princess Diaries read the book.

Frothy. Like chiffon.,
By Katherine Lothlorien (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nicola and the Viscount (Mass Market Paperback)
Before I begin, I'd like to say that I LIKE THIS BOOK. Reading over what I've said, it sounds very patronising, but I'm a big Cabot fan. Love 'The Princess Diaries' 1-3. Was a little disappointed in the 4th, yes, but despite tone, I really do like the book. OK, I'll begin:I almost enjoyed 'The Princess Diaries: Mia goes Fourth'. 'All-American Girl' was disappointing. Luckily, Cabot almost simaltaneously releases a delightful bit of froth that does exactly what it tells you it will. A book cited as 'teen historical romance' isn't expected to be very deep, and because it's 'teen' there's got to be quite a few less 'heaving bosoms' etc than adult romance. The 'historical' part is a bit of a laugh. A nod to London society and a little history of the train is meant to warrant this at a guess. The romance is quite, quite charming, being quite, quite light and quite, quite predictable, which is always comforting. The plot is rather incredible (in the sense that it's not believable), although Cabot paints a mean hunk. Her male protagonists are droolworthy to say the least. Her main character, Nicola, is meant to appeal to us as the intelligent bimbo type, but is - generally speaking - just annoying. You get that though, and overall, this is a charming bit of froth that doesn't pretend to be anything else. Refreshing. If you want something heavier, try 'Les Liasons Dangereaux'. Or chocolate cake. Mmmmm. Chocolate. ... |
