Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4?The intent of this title is not clear. It is both a biography of a 10-year-old girl who lives on a sailboat with her family and travels around the world, and a book about boats and boating with a heavy emphasis on terminology but not on how things work or how to operate them. The cheery, simplistic prose ignores many questions children might have, such as how Nicola feels about her unusual lifestyle, how her parents earn a living, how they decide where to go, what adventures they have had, what it's like to be alone on the open sea, etc. Illustrated with full-color photographs, some of which are family snapshots, the layout is reminiscent of that of an album or scrapbook. The glossary is written on a higher reading level than the text and contains some definitions that will do little to clarify meaning for young readers. This is an interesting idea that falls short because of its lack of insight into this child's life and its lack of focus.?Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

Review

This book will widen horizons on what a home is and how people's lifestyles can be very different, yet very similar, to one's own -- Canadian Children's Literature, Summer 1997

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit scary, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Nicola's Floating Home (Crabapples) (Library Binding)
While most of this story relates interesting aspects of a house boat, one section on accidents relates a frightening tale of a mother's arms getting crushed in a winch. Another "accident" story would have been more appropriate for this young audience.
