The basic book on Nicolas Medtner,

There has been a mini renaissance of the works of Medtner in the last 20 years. One can now actually find recordings of all of this master's piano music (most in multiple recordings), his chamber works, and his three piano concerti. Medtner's songs are less-well represented, and cry out for a definitive recording (a recent CD of a handful of songs with singers Vassily Savenko and Iana Ivanilova, and pianist Boris Berezovsky is so wonderful that I nominate them to record every song.) All of Medtner's scores are now fairly easily available as well.
Barrie Martyn's book on Medtner, while pricey, is still in print. It is the basic text in English on the composer. The many musical examples in the text call out for foreknowledge of the music, or CD's ready at hand to illustrate Martyn's points. The biographical details are many and fascinating. Recommended to all lovers of this composer.
