3.0 out of 5 stars Nice blend
This is a nice blend of southern black folk music traditional gospel, and modern rock ballad-type songs. The only problem I had with this CD is that Nicole aparently tried too much of varing styles. Though its wonderful music, listeners tend to want to hear one style from one artiste. "Redeemer" and "On my knees" are great songs, but they don't blend...

4.0 out of 5 stars Personal and powerful, October 4, 2000

Like most others, I was introduced to Nicole through hearing "Redeemer" on the radio. The first time I heard it, I turned it up about halfway through realizing it was a nice song. The next time, I recognized it right away, cranked it up, and was sobbing by the end of the first stanza as I motored down the highway. It really speaks to me about who Jesus is and what He did for us all. I really like the rest of her CD, but I think my favorites (aside from "Redeemer") are "Granny's Angel," "Black, White, Tan," and "Homemade." Nicole's got a great voice; it's beautiful, rich and soulful, and not overly high-pitched or screechy. For those of you who like to belt out tunes on your way to work, this is a great one. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I haven't really gotten into some of the faster, more raucous songs on her album. That's not to say I won't, but overall I think I prefer her when she's singing slower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicole In Control, December 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Nicole C. Mullen (Audio CD)
I received this CD for Christmas. I have heard "Redeemer" on the radio. And that's why I wanted the CD. As soon as I opened the package I played the whole CD. I was truly amazed. My favorites are "Ready for This" "Butterfly" "Granny's Angel" "Family Tree" "Redeemer" "Freedom" "On My Knees". Once you listen you are hooked. I taped the CD so I can listen while I drive. I can't wait until she performs live in the Washington D.C. area. I only have I complaint, the first song "Ready For This" should have been named "I Believe In Jesus".

4.0 out of 5 stars Going by what I know, December 18, 2000

I must first admit that I have not heard this entire album. I was once walking through Vista Ridge Mall in Lewisville, Texas and Nicole C. Mullen was performing a free show there. I just caught the end of it and she was performing "Redeemer." I'd heard the song on the radio and was glad to be able to put a face to the name. But I was also blown away by her performance. The song had already been able to stir up emotions in me and seeing her live was extremely impressive. The only other song I've heard is "Black, White, Tan," which to me is just as beautiful a song, but still slightly lacks in its ability to create emotion.

It boggles my mind how I read some reviews which suggest that Nicole C. Mullen should cut back or completely avoid any mention of race. That is exactly why there is still a problem with racism today, because people want to avoid it. What's the saying again? That the most segregated time in America is 11 AM on a Sunday morning. If she can't talk about such a tragesty on her own CD, then who can and where can he or she do it? People who want to avoid it need to open their eyes and realize that it needs to be dealt with. I support anyone who is trying to do that.

5.0 out of 5 stars This 'Homemade chick' is IT!, September 24, 2000
This review is from: Nicole C. Mullen (Audio CD)
WOW! I bought this album because of the song "Redeemer" (so beautiful it makes me cry!) and what a surprise! I love the whole album. It features so many different styles of music... Funky, Soul-Stirring, Gospel, ballads (she wrote "On My Knees"). My three year old son loves the song "Freedom" and always wants me to crank up the volume on that one. Nicole is one talented lady. I'm so impressed that she (and her husband) have written all the songs on the album, as well as the fact that she has a terrific voice. She even used the vocals of her daughter and father on this wonderful debut album. I love what she has written on the liner notes of her album: " Be encouraged! If God could do something special with me, 'the homemade chick', then He can surely do something great with your life too!" AMEN!If you are looking for something different, with a great beat and amazing lyrics, glorifying God and lifting the spirit, try this one! You won't be disappointed! I look forward to hearing more from Nicole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spread the word ... please!, December 3, 2005

I can't believe this woman's face and reports of her music are not all over the place, in print and in other media! While much of Nicole C. Mullen's music is classically Christian, some is not and/or selections are considered 'cross-overs' from other genres. Nevertheless, her message--whether she composed it herself or adapted other peoples' music--is always respectful, celebratory and positive, inspirational and loving ... beautiful to listen to. The woman's talent deserves to be more widely recognized; legions of folks need to be enjoying her gifts! I can't say enough...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Funkabilly" indeed!, July 26, 2000

I recently saw Nicole on a live "Summer Concert Series" on The 700 Club, and was truly impressed. This CD is fresh, unique, and honestly unlike anything I've heard in either the Christian or mainstream market. "Redeemer" is sure to win a Dove Award for "Song of the Year" next year; what a powerful, powerful song! And Nicole proves herself to be a diverse artist who can cover multiple styles of music and still be head and shoulders above her competition!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite artist /music of the year 2000(REDEEMER), December 21, 2000
This review is from: Nicole C. Mullen (Audio CD)
I have tried to get in contact with Nicole Mullen, but it seems like all my efforts has proven futile. Firstly I give God the glory for planting such a rvelation in the soul of Nicole;I am so convinced that nobody but God that revealed the wordings of the song REDEEMER to Nicole .Right now as I am writing this review I am listening to the demo of the song;I can't afford to stop listening to the song. When I go to school,I take my walk man and the track REDEEMER I bought two extra tracks to send to my friends in Africa. Believe me or not this is the theme of the Gospel that Jesus is alive and because he lives Believers are bound to see tomorrow .Every word of the track blesses my heart but specifically the part that says:"I spoke with him this morning". Oh what a song, I can't adequately express how much I love this song,oh my God,all the kids in my house know the song because I play it so frequently. At the Family Chtistian Book store in the area I live,I have made every associate to pay attention to the track, they wonder why I love the song so much, therefore one of the associates promised me that she was going to get one of the tracks for herself. I want personally thank you for using your gift for the one who gave you the gift.I wish to hear from you. May God cntinue to give you spirit-filled words, keep also in mind that he who begin this good work is faithful to complete it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Third Outing!, October 25, 2000
This review is from: Nicole C. Mullen (Audio CD)
Very few people know this, but this is actually Nicole's third album. The first two were released quite a few years ago, under just her first name, Nicole. Because she grew up in the church that my husband and I belong to (her parents are still members of leadership there), I have had the pleasure of meeting her on several occasions, and she is just as wonderful in person as she is on her albums. Yes, she is political, to an extent, but I admire the fact that she has the courage to speak out on issues that are close to her heart. Like everyone else who has reviewed, I adore "Redeemer". I think I cry every time I hear it. I also like "Black, White, Tan," partially because I can identify with it-like Nicole, I am married to a white man and have two beautiful biracial children. Her songs are about the things that she faces in her everyday life. She, like most of us, has faced down some things that would make some people balk. But she lived to tell the tale, and God has annointed her voice so that she could do so in a most compelling way. I look forward to hearing more.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Like It, September 4, 2005
This review is from: Nicole C. Mullen (Audio CD)
My mother purchased this CD after watching Nicole C. Mullens perform the song Redeemer. She has a beutiful, soft, peaceful, and feminine voice. I also enjoy the other songs on this album even the ones that deal with race and the way we act and treat one another. Nicole C. Mullens is not just a singer she is an artist and she expresses herself as such throughout this album. Not being trapped by traditionalism; she gracefully delivers a message of love for humanity, love for your neighbor, love for God and His love for all of us.
