Book Description

4 and upChildren's Best-Sellers
Nicolo dreams about meeting a unicorn. What will it look like? he wonders. What will it eat? Will he be able to ride on its back all the way to the moon? The grown-ups in Nicolo's life tell him to stop dreaming and get ready for school, finish his dinner, do his homework, and play with his friends. He should know there is no such thing as a unicorn! But Nicolo doesn't want to stop dreaming, and keeps searching for answers. He finally visits his grandfather, who explains to him that unicorns are everywhere-in music, books, art, and more. You just have to know how to look for them. This sweet, uplifting story of a boy refusing to give up his dream will be treasured by kids of all ages, and is brought to life through illustrator Bimba Landmann's colorful, dreamlike paintings. Bronze powder used in a special printing process lends magical touches of gold throughout. The text is simple to follow, ready for enjoyment by readers of all levels.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Nicolo is always daydreaming about unicorns, much to the annoyance of his family and teachers. When he asks what they think a unicorn might like or do, their answer is always the same: "Don't be silly. You know there's no such thing as a unicorn." Finally, when Nicolo asks his grandfather where he can find a unicorn, the man tells him that these creatures do exist and where to find them. He is to look in art, music, and books; in his imagination; and in his heart. Unfortunately, the grandfather does not show Nicolo how he might do this, or enable him in any way to discover it for himself. By delivering a lecture on the subject, the story emerges as didactic rather than a tribute to what the imagination can provide. Landmann's illustrations, with their pre-Raphaelite inspiration and her own contemporary flourishes, are remarkable. They glow with color, and the angles and perspectives employed draw the eye to every detail on the spreads. However, it is puzzling as to why two pages are devoted to each of Nicolo's rebuffs, but grandfather's advice, with its myriad components, also gets only two pages.
