Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. Bohr, a theoretical physicist who made enormous contributions to nuclear science, is a difficult subject for a biography for young readers because of the complexity of his work. In this entry in the Great Minds of Science series, Pasachoff successfully describes both the science and the scientist in admirably clear language that explains both basic concepts and advanced theories, often illustrated with diagrams. Pasachoff also emphasizes Bohr's humanitarian efforts, including his resistance to Nazi occupation during World War II and his profound concerns about the uses of nuclear energy. Among the smattering of black-and-white photos are many candid images of Bohr with his contemporaries, including a shot of him lounging on a couch with Einstein. A chronology, notes, and further reading conclude a useful volume that will support a variety of curricular studies. Gillian Engberg
