Book Description

Before Richard Pryor and Dave Chappel, Steve Harvey and Chris Rock, there was Dick Gregory. He was one of the first to use comedy as a tool to wake up people about the social and political ills that plague our society.

In addition to being a comic, Gregory is also a Civil Rights and social activist (he marched with Dr. King), a weight-loss and nutrition guru, and entrepreneur. Nigger is his autobiography, which sold more than a million copies.

This is the first time it’s been made available in ebook format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading. November 14, 2012
By Dean
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There will be those put off by the title, but this classic autobiography by Dick Gregory is finally available as an e-book, and it's long overdue. It should be impossible for anybody to read this and not be affected by the things Mr. Gregory went through as a citizen of the United States of America in the 40's, 50's, and 60's, but it is also a significant chronicle of a man who didn't let adversity and abuse destroy his humanity. Given the way racism resonates even today in American society, this book is every bit as relevant now as it was then. Highly recommended, but probably not for overly-sensitive, politically-correct types, though they should read it too.

Insightful book by someone who gave up the limelight to affect cultural change. I thoroughly enjoy this work and think others should consider turning the pages of history.

Performed the first part if this story in college speech and debate. Years later, I returned to read the rest of the book. If you're not inspired after this, you have no pulse. A must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding personal biography from a modern Prophet March 19, 2014
By BEANIE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dick Gregory has always been a hero to me since the days of demonstrations and marching. He stood for what he believed and proved it many times. But I had been curious about his youth and rise to success. In this book he takes us into his early world. The writing is vivid, well done, smooth and covers a period in history that shows where his character was developed from his painful childhood of poverty and keen awareness of class distinction. His immense intelligence helped him form his earliest method of self protection: humor. Once he got the bullies laughing at his self deprecating humor, he won their hearts. He worked hard as a shoe shine person, whatever jobs he could get; he pushed himself to become a great track star and athlete which opened doors to him that otherwise would have been closed. He is honest about his experiences, and his never-give-up attitude to the nth degree helped him create his own night club. This is an exceptional biography, very inspiring.
