Book Description

March 1, 2002
"The Nigger Bible - written by an acknowledged Nigger about the experience of Niggers, addressed and directed exclusively to my Nigger people for whom it was purposely conceived. Thus does the late internationally acclaimed author Robert H. deCoy introduce this explosive best seller. First published in 1967, The Nigger Bible is universally accepted as one of the true classics of the literature of the American Black experience. Robert H. deCoy has been praised and damned around the world for the volatile work. In his introduction of the edition, entainer Dick Gregory calls deCoy 'one of the literay giants of our time' who has dared to discard the traditional vestiges of Judeo-Christianity in order to find and reveal a seething, shocking truth that all men know but none have dared to express."

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't get it, November 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nigger Bible (Paperback)
Somebody handed me this book when I was in college and I dutifully tried to read it thinking that I was going to discover some deep knowlege. Nah. The history is pedestrian. Your child's black history encyclopedia gives more facts and figures. The book is written largely in slang that no-one born after 1970 can understand anymore. It's paranoid, defeatist and wallows in victimology.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype, July 9, 2011
By
Hurt (Chattanooga, TN.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Nigger Bible (Paperback)
Well, I have to admit, the title made me curious and also the author's last name (deCoy). I had to read it to see if this was meant as a joke or what, satire or social comment. And I really still don't exactly know for sure.
What was interesting was the author's explanation of ourselves being God-like beings. "Look within yourself, where you were told not to look. There is the place where God is, either living, or dead."(page 130) But as we read on to page 165 we are told "A true God has no need to engage Witless Mortals, on behalf of his Immortal Divinity." I was lost and not sure of this contridiction but I had to remember this was perhaps written by a mad, drunk african american? Well, I hoped.
Page 131- "Flee the Caucasian Bitch...who offers you the flesh of her body to atone for the race prejudice of her relatives and friends. For she feels herself a Martyr in this Debasement." I'm speechless...
I mean some of this book is pretty heavy, and it seems to be written as a serious piece, but , man, it's out there at times (most of the time).
Pick it up if you want to see something a bit different than you are used to on the View or Today show.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was extremely educational and inspired me to think, June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nigger Bible (Paperback)
Robert H. DeCoy's writings have always inspired me to "read between the lines" and to search for the truth, or at least consider an alternative view of what the truth is. The Nigger Bible was the first book that I read which challenged my psyche and intellect as it relates to what I was taught and what I believed to be the truth on the topic of spirituality. Every person who is sincerely interested in understanding how Black people latch onto religion as a support mechanism should read, study, and understand this book.
