Review

"Bestseller Jeffries (To Wed a Wild Lord) delivers a moving Regency with heart, soul, and holiday spirit ... The compelling, fast-paced, and lively tale wraps up with several surprising, tear-jerking twists."--Publishers Weekly

"Sharply witty, deliciously sexy, and infinitely endearing, this holiday gem strikes an emotional chord that will resonate with fans long after the book has been closed. Jeffries's first hardcover release, it serves as a bridge between her recent "Hellions of Halstead Hall" quintet and a new series that is slated to begin next spring." (Library Journal)

"Bestseller Jeffries delivers a moving Regency with heart, soul, and holiday spirit.... The compelling, fast-paced, and lively tale wraps up with several surprising, tear-jerking twists." (Publishers Weekly)

"Jeffries' latest historical romance is an enchanting holiday charmer with a complex and captivating plot; characters that interact with emotional authenticity; and a rich set of conflicted, heart-tugging obstacles--all of which combine to provide a satisfying happily-ever-after set against a fun holiday backdrop. Skillful writing and storytelling, compelling sexual and emotional tension, and a cast of realistic, vulnerable characters contribute to a lovely, spirited Christmas winner." (Kirkus)

This book... I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't this! I mean, I started tearing up while reading the prologue. Yeah. The prologue. And I don't think my eyes were ever completely dry again. From those very first few pages, Pierce had me. Unequivocally. His pain was my pain. He got his tiny little eight year old fingers latched around my heart and never let go.

Because, at a very young age, Pierce Waverly learned a hard lesson: Life isn't fair. Abandoned by his parents, sent to live with distant relations, Pierce grows up to feel unwanted. Confused and hurt, he's spent his childhood and adulthood lashing out. Drinking, gambling, mistresses upon mistresses--Pierce wants his parents to know he just doesn't give a damn. About them or anything.

Or so he wishes. Because when his mother's companion, Mrs. Camilla Stuart, sends an express to tell him his mother is seriously ill--he can't help but go to her immediately. (Which speaks volumes in itself.) When he finds out that his mother might not be as ill as alluded to, or, really, ill at all... He's not as angry as you might expect. More than anything, he's intrigued by the capricious Mrs. Stuart.

Camilla is the epitome of a caring and devoted woman. Having spent nearly six months with Pierce's mother, Lady Devonmont, hearing her tell stories about Pierce as a boy, she can't help but become enraged on her behalf. What kind of son ignores his mother? Refuses to answer her letters or visit? As an orphan, Camilla doesn't--can't--understand. And when you combine that with a brash and straight-forward personality, well, you get Camilla. She must mend their fences, try to help solve their problems.

I fell in love with Sabrina Jeffries' Hellions of Halstead Hall series earlier this year and was so excited when I heard Pierce Waverly was going to have his story told as well. And I mean total squealy fangirl excited. After little glimpses of him in the series I was dying to find out more about him and let me tell you he was so much more than I could have hoped for. 'Twas the Night After Christmas was an amazingly powerful read that's both sweet and touching with a little humor added in. It had me on the edge of tears more than once as well. It hit all my emotions and is one that will always have a place on my shelves.

Camilla and Pierce were wonderfully written characters. I loved their whole set up with Camilla more or less tricking Pierce into coming home to visit his estranged mother who was "deathly ill". Camilla was, quite simply, a meddler. Not to mention determined and head strong. She wanted this family to mend itself and was going to make that happen no matter what it took.

And Pierce, well, he had quite the reputation and could be such an ass but really you couldn't hold it against him all that long. You could feel his hurt and pain and see exactly where he was coming from. I was on his side nearly the entire book when it came to his family who had just been horrid to him in the past. He's really an amazingly sweet man under it all and does such sweet things for the people around him and you can't help but fall a little in love.

Overall the book's fairly serious but there's little bits of humor tucked in here and there that kept the serious tone from being too overwhelming. There were some great moments between Camilla and Pierce when they'd call each other's bluff.

I really enjoyed reading "Twas the Night After Christmas" by Sabrina Jeffries. She does a wonderful job of bringing in so much emotion and sensitivity in storytelling. If you have read "The Hellion" series, you will remember Pierce Waverly, the Earl of Devonmont. Now we have him in his own story and it's great. Pierce is estranged from his Mother since childhood and refuses any contact. But one day he receives an urgent letter from Mrs. Stuart, the companion stating that he must come home because his Mother is seriously ill. Thinking this is a life or death situation, he goes.
But when he arrives, his Mother is in perfect health and not on her deathbed. Pierce thinks that Camilla Stuart, a widow, tricked him in the process. But he soon finds out that he can't bully or intimidate a woman who only wants to bring mother and son together for Christmas.
Can the spirit of the holidays change a hardened man to a loving son? You will have to read and find out. I received this arc from edelweiss for an honest review.
