1.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster illustrations
Only a few of the pages in this book have color illustrations, and some of those don't hold the attention of a young child. A large number of two-page spreads had only a very small black and white pen sketch on each page. I'm suprised at reviews that rave about the illustrations. We were disappointed enough to return this.

Christian Birmingham's illustrations of this classic story only serve to enhance the wonder and warmth of Christmas. The illustrations have a wonderful dream-like quality to them. This book should be a part of every families Christmas library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful reissue of a timeless holiday classic, October 4, 2005
This review is from: The Night Before Christmas: The Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
The Night Before Christmas: The Anniversary Edition is a large-sized picturebook featuring the classic Christmas poem by Clement C. Moore and warm, colorful, museum quality illustrations by Christian Birmingham . The typeface is so big that it is quite easy to read along with young ones, and the twinkling gleam in Santa's eyes is perfectly captures in the impressively memorable artwork. A beautiful reissue of a timeless holiday classic, The Night Before Christmas is an ideal family gift for the holiday season and would make a popular edition for community library holiday picturebook collections.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull illustrations, December 24, 2010
This review is from: The Night Before Christmas: The Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
I understand the everything Santa does, happens at night, but I don't think a children's book should be illustrated that way. There is very little color in this book. After reading this one to our daughter for three years, we are in search of a new, more colorful and expressively illustrated version of this classic story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Family Tradition, January 16, 2006
This review is from: The Night Before Christmas: The Anniversary Edition (Hardcover)
I purchased this book to start a new family tradition. It is oversized and has large print. Not every page has a color picture, but those that don't do have a black and white sketch. Of all the books of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" that I reviewed before purchasing, this was the best. I hope it will become a well-loved family tradition to be read each year by our family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical wonders await readers, December 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a 4 year old who loves to read and I was very excited imagining how his eyes would light up when he opened the book for the first time. Also, as I have no copy of this book and still enjoy reliving my childhood memories, I was excited about seeing the magical pictures that so many reviewers raved about.

Initially, I felt worried because the full-page colour illustrations had a sort of old watercolour feel to them that I thought would disappoint my son. I wanted bolder colours and better definition, and I kept squinting to try to discern more detail. The book actually turned out to be a real wonderland of thrills for him, as he was able to discern nametags on the reindeer, and would scream out the names as he read them, and match their names to Santa's chant of "On Dasher, On Dancer,..." etc.

Also, the book is hardcover so it will last a long time, the print is large and easy to read which makes it well suited to young ones who want to read on their own or along with an adult. I have revised my rating of this book to reflect how pleased I am, because my son transported me to a happy, magical place every night leading up to Christmas with his reading of this lovely book.

I love Christian Birmingham art work but I wasn't very excited with the illustration in this book. I have seen better copies of the famous Night Before Chistmas poem.
