Were this book a movie, I'd happily pay the firstborn child they're charging these days to go see it. This novel is a seminal military thriller, unafraid to tackle the real blood, guts and mayhem that play companion to war.

What Christie has built here is more than tactics and military conquest; it's harried defense and raw in-the-moment emotion, nuanced character relationships and exotic South African flavor that you can't get anywhere else. Best of all, this book is charmingly devoid of the political propagandizing that seems to follow its genre. Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand it when an author uses their book simply as a soapbox. There's a message here, but it's more "witness this incredible story" than "here's my agenda, agree with it". Give me a DVD and I will buy.

When I picked by this book, I had no idea what to expect. A friend of mine shoved it in my face and said "You have to read this!" So I did, and wow... I'm at a loss for words. I loved every word of this, violence and all. It kept me turning the pages for hours until finally there was nothing left to turn. I always know a book is good if I keep trying to force my kindle to go onto the next page but it refuses to do so because there is no more text for it to go to! That's what happened here and I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's not the faint of heart to be sure, but it is absolutely worth the read.

The adventures of a trio of South Africa police officers -- a white former AS Special Forces soldier, a Russian ex-Spetsnaz soldier and a large Zulu. The book describes the rampant crime and poverty in Johannesburg, and the wealth. The moving force of the plot is uSathane, the most-feared gangster in J'burg, who had ties to Robert Mugabe; and the search for a billion dollar treasure reportedly secretly transported from Libya to the S.A. desert by Gadhaffi at the time he knew he was about to be deposed. The description of the daily police work and the nature of the crime made this a fascinating read.

"Night of the Black Bastards" is rich with detail. Although the topic of this story is a bit complex, the book is highly readable. Casie Christie allows you to see several sides of the South African conflict. It's a riveting, fictional account of the militant tactics used in a country torn by a variety of issues. This isn't a genre that I find myself reading a lot. With that being said, I enjoyed the writing very much, and he did a great job at turning this story into an exciting, tension filled, drama. The essence of the plot makes it almost impossible to put this book down.

I enjoyed this book and hope that the author comes out with a sequel. It was interesting to read about SA law enforcement tactics.

Not what I would normally read and was hard for me to get into. Wasn't too bad after getting further in.

A rip roaring tale with a South African flair that brings quick and easy life to its characters, weaves plots & subplots in an African style "layers of reality," and has enough full-up adventure to be a "must read."

Looking for much more from Casey Christie when Officer Michael Night and the cast of characters return!
