5.0 out of 5 stars Good read June 24, 2011

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Night of the Cossack is a fast paced adventure about a boy thrust into manhood in less than ideal circumstances. The author uses vivid imagery and historical fact to weave a compelling and interesting journey. This book is life as it is and not as we would like it to be. We find tragedy, heartbreak, heartache, and constant adjustment through the story of Nathan Hertzfield, much like we find in real life. This made it easy to identify with and appreciate the circumstances in which Nathan found himself and for me made the book all the more enjoyable. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a good story and learn some things along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the book - good for kids, too June 13, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book after my 12 year old read it and loved it. He is a voracious reader (Harry Potter books, the Hunger Games series, Rick Riordan and the Percy Jackson series etc.) He read the book from start to finish in one session and declared it one of the best books he has ever read. Naturally, I decided to read the book and I am glad I did. It is a very engaging story that you can't wait to see what happens next. The characters are very moving and well written. There is an excellent plot and the story really drew me in. This is a great story that kids as well as adults can both read and enjoy. Wonderful book, and I really hope there is a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Night of the Cossack by Tom Blubaugh - A Must Read! July 30, 2011
Nathan Hertzfield is a young Jewish boy who was kidnapped by a Cossack named Nikolai and so the story begins. Nathan went from a boy to a man rather quickly. He had no choice. This story is full of suspense and you will cheer for Nathan from the beginning to the end. Nathan always wanted to do the right thing. His Momma taught him well. I was so caught up in this book that I read it in less than a day. When it ended I still wanted more. I hope that Mr. Blubaugh is writing a follow up to this book. There is more to learn from Nathan. I want to know what happens to him! I loved what the Captain said to Nathan in the last two pages of the book. A book well written Mr. Blubaugh!

I won this book in a contest. I was thrilled to say the least. Thank you Mr. Blubaugh for selecting me. I am doing this review on my own. That wasn't a request from you for winning this book.

I also want to thank Bound By Faith Publishers for sending this book directly to me after I won in such a timely manner! Thank you Mr. Vance! (Please encourage Mr. Blubaugh to write a follow up book to Night of the Cossack. His readers want more! God Bless!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Adventure May 27, 2011
In one night, Nathan finds his entire life completely altered when he is taken captive by a Cossack and forced to become one of them. This intrigued me. A lot. I can't imagine what I would do if I was kidnapped and told that I was going to be trained to be like my kidnapper. Talk about rocking your world! Needless to say, I began this book with very high hopes of reading an intriguing thriller. While it wasn't a thriller, it was still a grand adventure!

Nathan was easy to relate to. I instantly sympathized with him as he tries to adjust to a life with Nikolai--the man who kidnapped him to raise him to be a Cossack. The group's view on replacing their comrades killed during a fight--abducting young boys from their home--was pretty crazy. I can't imagine being in Nathan's shoes! What a life. With all that said, one of my favorite characters was his kidnapper, Nikolai. Crazy, I know, but as Nathan slowly changed and grew to look up to Nikolai as a did I. Nikolai wasn't like the other Cossacks--he'd been abducted as a teen himself and forced to join the cause--and that made him special. As I said, he was one of my favorite characters.

Tom Blubaugh's writing brought this story to life. From the very first pages I was thrust into Nathan's life the night it all changed--when Cossack's came into his village. With vivid detail--though not too much to make the story drag--I experienced being a Cossack through Nathan's eyes. The emotional scenes were a little flat and shallow to me, but that was the only thing I ever noticed in the writing.

The events that happen to Nathan during the course of this book are amazing. While I wouldn't call this book a thriller, it still had its fair share of action and adventure to keep me on my toes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Adventure for Teen Boys July 3, 2011
Night of the Cossack by Tom Blubaugh is an awesome 34 chapters and 250 pages of adventure young boys will love. It's a Christian novel and imprint of Bound by Faith Publishers, a beautiful paperback. When teen Nathan Hertzfield is kidnapped during a raid and forced to become a Cossack solider, life as he knew it is ripped apart. Mixed emotions run rampant as he's faced with life-altering, life-threatening situations. He feels lucky on one hand that his mother and brother are still alive, but he has to leave them and his past behind. Just when he thinks he's built a new life for himself, he finds himself on the run once again. He's lost so much at such a young age: loved ones, his home, family, and his own identity. Can he take losing the one thing he has left, his beloved horse? Just when he finds a woman and falls in love and dreams of starting his own family, he's forced to leave her too, without looking back. How much can one young man stand? He's a Jew forced to hide it and even expected to defend himself as a Cossack solider and kill other Jews, but he doesn't want to take a life. His mother raised a moral son, and even in the face of the obstacle course that's become his life, he vows to hold onto his character.

The author, Tom Blubaugh, a freelance writer who has written mostly nonfiction has turned his pen to fiction and spun an amazing tale of family heritage with a strong character readers will love. Filled with emotions, vivid description, and danger, this novel will keep the reader on his toes until the last page to discover what happens to Nathan in the end.

While it's not the type of book I'd normally select, my interest was captivated from the first chapter when Nathan didn't listen to his mother.
