Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Having already come close to beating Graham Parker, Elvis Costello, and Louis Jordan at their own games, Joe Jackson made a play for becoming the Cole Porter of his generation with this 1982 collection. Actually that's a bit of a cheap shot, especially considering what a refreshingly innovative album this was. Jackson truly hit his stride with a memorable set that combines new technology and classic songwriting. From the infectious "Chinatown" to the hits "Stepping Out" and "Breaking Us in Two," the album is a showcase for killer hooks wrapped up in shiny keyboards and Latin-tinged percussion. Small wonder that Jackson waited two decades to attempt a sequel. --Bill Forman

5.0 out of 5 stars Cancer., March 20, 2000
By Jason Stein (Chula Vista, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I know that Joe Jackson fans will say that his first cd is his best, but I'd like to review Night and Day. I think that Look Sharp is very very good, but Night and Day has more maturity and finesse to it than does the punk attitude of Look Sharp. Joe Jackson is an amazing musician when you look over his entire catalog of work. I have all of his cds except 1987's Will Power which is out of print. The thing that makes Night and Day so good is the songs. Hits like "Steppin' Out" and "Breaking Us In Two" are here and great album cuts like "Chinatown", "Into Another World", "Cancer", "Real Men" and "A Slow Song" round out the cd. A solid work with poignant lyrics and classy rhythms. This is a must have for any rock collector. So is Look Sharp (1979). If anyone is wondering whether Joe will return to pop music, you are not alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strong release, April 20, 2004

This still remains Joe Jackson's milestone release.

Most likely due to the mix of catchy rhythms and wonderful piano work.

Much of the music is upbeat and fun to listen to, even many years after being released.

5.0 out of 5 stars We..so tired of all the darkness in our lives.., December 16, 2001
By A Customer
Yes, it sums up everything that I need to say about "Night and Day". The lyrics from "Steppin' Out" really say what I feel about life and future in general. And oh! What a beautiful bassline with tinkling the keyboard in the background.

I picked up this album sometime ago in this "Sale Bins" after watching the MTV Classic of "Steppin' Out". It captures a certain feeling of the dark and dampness of the streets after the rain. It sort of grow on me after the nights I spend on the driving on the wet streets of Portland (yes it rains a lot over there!) and everytime I heard those words "Me babe, steppin out into the night..into the light" it creeps in like a lonely feeling. Windy nights, cold rain, a scarf and a peacoat jacket!

It is released in 1982 but still shines like a gem. I also love the sketchy cover of Joe on the piano. A classic! It shows how the nightlife lurks in the background calling to follow them..into the night, into the light.

I haven't listened to N&D II, but an album of this stature can not be matched with a sequel. So better off to value N&D II on its own merit.
