5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten 80's Horror!!!!, November 29, 2008
By
This review is from: Night of the Demon (DVD)
After seeing that the sole reviewer of this film had given it 1 out of 5 stars after discovering that it wasn't the film he was searching for (50's B&W "Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon), I felt compelled to at least post something that would maybe steer future ghouls and girl's in the right direction. If you have a penchant for that 80's straight to video feel, look no further. Here's what The Gore-Met had to say about the film in Rue Morgue's 11th Anniversary edition, "Night of the Demon (1980) - A university professor takes an anthropology class into the woods to search for the mythical Bigfoot. Campfire tales of deadly sasquatch encounters are recounted in flashback, including a motorcyclist with a weak bladder who gets his d*ck ripped off! A sordid back story presages a bloody climax in which Bigfoot whips people with loops of their own intestines!". That synopsis was pulled from The Met's 50 Essential Gore Films article.

I saw this flick when I was about eight at a sleepover and it freaked me out! The film obviously is not five stars worthy, I rated it that high to offset the one star review it unjustly received. If you're not into the seedy vibe that most of the late 70's/early 80's horror films wreaked of, don't bother checking this out. But if you're into forgotten, overlooked 80's horror, the kind that triumphantly waves the 'so bad it's good' flag, then Night of the Demon is worth at least one viewing on nostalgia alone. To say that this Bigfoot has anger issues would be the understatement of the new century. Bon appetite! \M/

5.0 out of 5 stars Sasquatch Gore Flick, July 26, 2010
This review is from: Night of the Demon (DVD)
In all seriousness, this movie is in my top five and for no logical reason can I figure out why hardly anyone cares about it. Bigfoot movies have a strong following, and this is a Bigfoot movie. Gore flicks have a strong following, and this is ultra-gory. Good movies have strong followings, and this is one of the best made horror movies ever made. Why does no one else believe it?

Somehow it almost seems to make sense, as in the "real-world," normal people don't believe in Bigfoot, and disregard those who claim to have seen the great beast in the EXACT same manner that everyone seems to have written off this movie as another hokey bigfoot romp with a cheesy gorilla suit and the same old worn-down plot, but it ISN'T any of that. This is the movie horror fans dream about, and wish someone would make, yet it already exists. Again, it feels like a twist on reality because those of us who have seen this movie believe in it's greatness, and I want bang my skull against a tree when no one seems to acknowledge this beauty captured on film.

So I randomly decided to search and see if some forlorn company has yet to birth a quality release of NIGHT OF THE DEMON, and instead I see 2 reviews (one by an imbecile who gave it zero stars because he's a moron looking for the wrong movie), and another guy who is in the same boat as I. The release available as of 2010 is a bootleg from several years ago and looks just like a burn from the same VHS home video copy I already own and have watched 100 times. It's no better, but no worse visually. The cover art is, however, deplorable in many ways and made me cringe when I got a copy several years back, before being disappointed that it was a bootleg and not the pristine quality one has come to expect on DVD. I could have burned the video to disc myself, and can't understand why these bootleg companies enjoy ripping people off like this. As of today, the cheapest copy of this bootleg is listed at $60. What in the Himalayas is wrong with the world today?? This release is a cheap quality bootleg, so please don't waste your money on it.

This movie is genuinely one of the greatest entries in the gore catalog and inevitably will get a definitive release someday, and what moved me to write this "review" is the fact that this hasn't happened yet. If the owner of the Copy-Right happens to read this, please contact me and I will personally pay for a high quality transfer release onto dvd and would love to interview anyone involved in the making of this film. If you've never seen the movie, you're in for a ride because this one delivers buckets of gore and has a great story, a GREAT twist, great acting, etc. It's really every bit as good as you've dreamed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ludicrously bad, but watchable for just that reason., October 25, 2010
This review is from: Night of the Demon (DVD)
Basically, a bunch of bland, hairy, plaid-wearing nobodies hike around the woods and get knocked off by Bigfoot. They also reminisce about Bigfoot killing other people.

I can't say much about this one, so I'll just leave you with a list:

- Scenes are lit literally by campfire.

- Gratuitous nudity.

- Gratuitous rampant plaid-wearing.

- Horrid continuity (including the classic night one minute, day the next, and then night again).

- Loads of gore including the infamous castration scene.

- Bigfoot looking remarkably like Chewbacca with rabies, and so much more.

A horrid movie, but somewhat watchable. I must say it scared me, knowing that Bigfoot is out there, somewhere, always ready to rip my junk off.
