Imagine a spirit realm that cannot regenerate. Young spirits are sent to find the fertile seed, returning it to the realm by night of the fertile crescent moon. Whichever is successful will reign eternally as Queen Spirit, the fertile seed its consort. Let us also imagine that these same spirits watch over humanity, governing our interaction with one another. Let’s go to Rivers Lounge, an average working-class bar and grill. We can listen to an ancient tale that the cook is translating. In this story, Prince Malevolent has usurped the throne, exiled the consort, and taken the Queen Spirit as its own. Rejecting Malevolent, the Queen clings to the memory of her consort’s love, so Malevolent banishes memory from the realm. In the cook’s translation we discover that, without memory, the spirits forget their true purpose—guiding humanity. And without the spirits to guide it, humanity loses its mind.
