Book Description

July 6, 1999

On assignment in Copenhagen to locate and buy back missing stinger missiles, Casey returns to her apartment to find the lifeless body of a brutally murdered biker. The victim is the brother of one of the leaders of the Bandidos, a ruthless motorcycle gang, engaged in a vicious turf war with Denmark's Hells Angels.

Struggling to extract herself from the compromising situation, Casey learns that her partner in the Stinger missile project has been shot, caught in the crossfire of a gun battle between the Hells Angels and the Bandidos. Suddenly Casey is the sole link between two violent deaths, and when she barely escapes an ambush, it becomes dangerously clear that someone wants her out of the way before she makes the connection between the dead men.

As the solstice approaches in the land of the midnight sun, a dark web of treason, espionage and terrorism spreads from Washington, D.C., to the capitals of Eastern Europe. Both the Danish police and U.S. embassy officials are asking a lot of questions, but the more Casey learns the less she can reveal to them. Now the countdown has begun in Casey's desperate race against time to save lives and not to lose her own. From the highest circles of power to the violent criminal underworld, she follows a trail across Europe on a harrowing search for the perpetrators-only to find that they might be closer to her than she ever imagined, waiting to destroy her at any moment.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Black market missiles and warring bikers mix dangerously with a teenage boy's medical emergency and a troubling, out-of-the-past romance in Deverell's solid second Casey Collins novel (after 12 Drummers Drumming). A U.S. Foreign Service counter-terrorism officer on assignment in Denmark, Casey is about to leave for Bangor, Maine, to help investigate a passenger plane disaster in which more than 400 people died. But she's detained by the local police when the body of a dead biker is found in her apartment. The victim was a member of a gang called the Bandidos, and when Casey's partner, Gerry Davis, is gunned down in a shoot-out between the Bandidos and the Danish Hell's Angels, Casey realizes it's no coincidence. The case she and Gerry were working onAthe search for black market StingersAinvolves the gangs in a convoluted conspiracy she must unravel. This takes priority over even the possibility that terrorists caused the Bangor airplane explosion, but Casey's sleuthing is complicated by a number of people whose paths cross hers, each of them unpredictable and with their own agendas, which send the reader to France, Thailand, Washington, D.C., and all over Eastern Europe. Along for the international ride are Andrew Markham, Casey's former (now married) boyfriend, who specifically requested the post as Gerry Davis's assistant; Casey's security officer, Bella Hinton, who's searching for the father of her sick son, Woody, who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant; an aggressive FBI agent; a British biker expert; and a Danish informant. The engaging narrative is an adroit blend of soap opera and action-adventure, with the human relationships sharing center stage with the gripping mystery and the wily plot twists. Thanks to sharp storytelling, the intertwining subplots feed seamlessly into the main plot line, and Deverell's fine-tuned first-person narration showcases Casey's intelligence and emotional heft to equally involving effect. Agent, Nancy Yost. (July) FYI: Deverell is a former U.S. Foreign Service officer.

From Booklist

Foreign Service officer Casey Collins, an expert on Stinger missiles, is in Copenhagen to locate a group of missing Stingers and deliver them into U.S. hands. Then she finds a dead man in her apartment--not just any dead man but a member of the Bandidos biker gang, which is involved in a war to take over the European market for drugs and stolen weapons from the rival Hell's Angels. When Casey's boss is killed in a shootout between the gangs and Casey herself becomes the target of a deadly assassin, the supposedly routine assignment has become something altogether different. Deverell, a former Foreign Service officer, uses her experience to devise a suspense-filled, action-packed story with plenty of authentic touches. Her plotting wears thin in places, but overall, this is a satisfying international thriller for mainstream fans of the genre. Emily Melton

5.0 out of 5 stars Top rate espionage thriller, May 20, 1999

This review is from: Night on Fire (Hardcover)

CIA agent Gerry Davis asks for anti-terrorist expert Casey Collins to join his Norway based team. Gerry has worked with Casey before and knows she can add deep analysis to their investigation of missing Stinger missiles that Afghani rebels sold to the highest bidder. However, her stay in Copenhagen abruptly ends when a commercial plane apparently exploded over Bangor, Maine. Casey is a member of a special task force that looks for the less obvious reasons that might have caused a plane crash.

At the airport, the Danish police stop Casey from leaving the country because a murdered corpse of a biker has been found in her living quarters. Apparently, a member of the notorious Bandidos was killed while trying to see Casey. The police and FBI agent believe Casey knows what the deceased wanted to tell her. However, Casey's best friend, State Department representative Bella Hinton needs Casey to remain quiet for a few days. Casey would have refused for any reason except for the health of Bella's teenage son. Trapped between loyalty and three investigations on different sides of the Atlantic, Casey's troubles escalate when Gerry is murdered while making inquiries among the biker community. She is now everyone's target.

NIGHT ON FIRE is an excellent international espionage thriller that brings to life the anti-terrorism efforts of America and Europe. The story line is non-stop as treason and double cross is the name of the game. However, what makes Diana Deverell's novel worth reading is the author allows her characters to fully develop so that readers feel concern for them. Any person who enjoys an entertaining espionage thriller will want to read Ms. Deverell's superb novel.
