Book Description

Night of fire, night of passion

US Army Upland Ranger Tom Knox always knew going home wouldn’t be easy. Three years ago, he skipped town, leaving behind the only woman who ever mattered; now that he’s seen the front lines of war, he’s ready to do what he must to win her back.

Rosa Campos is long past wasting tears on Tom Knox, and now that she’s sheriff of Thornville, she has more than enough to do. Especially when a five-story rock-eating mining machine barrels toward the town she’s sworn to protect.

Tom’s the last person Rosa expects to see riding to her aid on his ether-borne mechanical horse. She may not be ready to forgive, but Rosa can’t deny that having him at her side brings back blissful memories . . . even as it reignites a flame more dangerous than the enemy threatening to destroy them both.

About the Author

Nico Rosso was a writer in search of a genre until his wife, Zoë Archer, brought romance into his life in more ways than one. Through her he learned that the romance genre was filled with vast opportunities for storytelling. He created the sci-fi romance Limit War series, sweeping readers off Earth and into an interstellar conflict. Closer to home, he set off the apocalypse with The Last Night. And, starting with The Ether Chronicles, he gets to write more closely than ever with his wife. They created the steampunk world together and trade off, telling romance tales that span the globe.

2.0 out of 5 stars Western Steampunk Romance, C Rating October 3, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
My Rating: 2.5 stars: Finished it - take it or leave it (C)

Our hero, Tom Knox, left his small coastal hometown of Thornville three years ago, leaving behind his love, Rosa Campos. He joined the service and has been fighting against the Hapsburg soldiers here on US soil - or in Tom's case, in the sky as an Upland Ranger. Before Tom left, he wasn't much of a hero or a man worthy of Rosa, and her parents were certain to remind him of that often. He returns now, uncertain of how he'll be received, yet certain that Rosa has settled down and moved on. To his surprise, Rosa is a changed woman - now the sheriff of Thornville, and she's never forgiven Tom for abandoning her those three long years ago.

Unfortunately, as soon as Tom arrives, there are serious problems for Thornville. The Crandall Mining Company, unhappy that no one would sell land in Thornville, is heading towards town in a massive monstrosity of a machine that destroys everything in its path. It's up to Tom and Rosa to overcome their past and work together to save the town.

Although this is the second story in The Ether Chronicles, the opening of Night of Fire is almost the complete opposite of the first book, Skies of Fire. Instead of jumping right into the action as in Skies, this book takes its time and introduces the reader to the surrounding landscape. We take a stroll down memory lane with Tom as he flies his way back to his childhood homestead and the woman he left behind. The beginning focuses on world-building and filling the reader in on the environment of the times.

Another change from the first book is that the locale has shifted from Europe to the United States in Night of Fire.

3.0 out of 5 stars All hat, no cattle... but not bad either! July 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Three years have passed since Tom Knox rode out of Thornville on a stolen horse, leaving Rosa behind. Now an Upland Ranger with the US Army he's gotten his honor back and he's ready to do everything in his power to win her back. But before he can properly woo Rosa, the pair will face off with an enemy who won't take no for an answer... a mining machine threatening to devour everything in its path including Thornville. The road back to passion will be paved with danger and the slivers of past hurts but if Tom and Rosa can save the town, surely they can find a way to forgive and rekindle the love they once shared.

While stripped down to it's formulaic elements NIGHT OF FIRE is a romance, I admit some hesitation recommending it to romance readers. When the hero and heroine are introduced they have lots of flaming physical chemistry but I found their personalities weren't fleshed out enough I felt like I knew them enough to root for a resolution to their past. Here in Montana we have a saying 'all hat, no cattle' which really fits the story overall. Rosso is a great writer, his action scenes are absolutely killer! I just found the romance lacked any of the substantial chemistry I expected due to lack of character development. Too much telling and not enough showing why they loved one another before that lead to a rekindled relationship.

Keeping in mind the romance was weak I have to flip this review and say that if you're looking for a really cool steampunk action adventure it rocked my socks. Rosa isn't a shrinking violet and the pair compliment one another well as partners in a mission to save Thornville. I'd actually very much recommend NIGHT OF FIRE to the male audience who enjoy an action-packed steampunk with a sprinkle of the other kind of steam without a bunch of gushy lovey-dovey stuff. I think it's got great cross-over appeal for romance fans looking to try steampunk and steampunk fans who dabble in romances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such a fun series! July 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fast-paced adventure read, with great action sequences and a strong romance. I especially liked the strength of the heroine; she was the hero's equal in courage and fighting skill, and they made a great team. The steampunk setting is fun, with the technology used well. There's an occasional hint of cool, shiny technology for its own sake, but mostly the tech, like the sex, serves the story.

I will definitely be reading more installments in this series!

2.0 out of 5 stars Steampunk/Western July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Steampunk fans and perhaps fans of westerns may really like this book. However, if you are looking for a romance you may want to stay away. This book is filled with a terribly broody hero and after awhile you may just not care what he has to brood over.

Tom Knox had left his true love high and dry when he realized that her parents would never accept him as Rosa's husband/boyfriend/lover.

He has joined the Army Rangers and has made something of himself.
Now he is back in Rosa's life (she is the sheriff of Thornsville) trying to help her rescue her town from the nefarious villains.

Ether horses that fly, villains that whisper, ground eating machinery and all sorts of chicanery seems to have been written about to set up a new series.
No romance but there is one fairly hot and heavy sex scene that seems to have been written with very little finesse.

An interesting intro to what I assume is a new series. But not one that I am going out of my way to follow.
