Book Description

May 11, 2004 8 and up3 and upHank Zipzer (Book 5)

Hank is thrilled about the "Best Field Trip of the Year"-everyone from Ms. Adolph's class gets to spend the night on an old-fashioned three-mast sailing ship in New York Harbor!  And Hank gets even more excited when the ship's captain chooses him to be the first mate.  But being first mate is not all it's cracked up to be, especially for a crazy captain who takes his job a little too seriously.  The best field trip of the year is becoming the worst night of Hank's life-how's he going to get out of this one?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–Another book featuring the dyslexic, list-making fourth-grader. Hank's class is scheduled to spend the night on The Pilgrim Spirit, a tall sailing ship docked in New York Harbor. He boards with the other students and soon learns that his nemesis, Nick McKelty, has tricked him again by nominating him for a job that involves a lot of cleaning for the mean and gruff captain. When Hank is learning knot tying, he accidentally unties the ship and they are soon adrift with a captain and first mate who are actors and know nothing about sailing. Hank, his friends, and his grandfather help to make for a happy ending. Although this book stands alone, fans of the series will enjoy spending more time with Hank and his cohorts. While the humor sometimes seems forced, the story has just enough details about dyslexia to attract those who have this learning disability and instill empathy in those who don't.–Debbie Stewart Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book series for 4th grade boys, December 12, 2004
By
This review is from: The Night I Flunked My Field Trip #5 (Hank Zipzer) (Paperback)
These books are hilariously funny for 4th grade boys. I'm sure girls can read them too but girls have a dozen or so book series to chose from so this one's for the little guys. I have a difficult time getting my 9 year old to read on his own but with these book, he reads every night and begs for the next book. According to my son, get the first book and then any of the following books can be read in any order.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Night I Flunked My Field Trip #5 (Hank Zipzer) (Paperback)
I read the book, The Night I Flunked My Field Trip by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver. I liked the book because it told about a kid who has a hard time remembering things. The book tells about how Hank tries and tries until he finally gets it right!

One of my favorite parts is when Hank unties the rope to learn how to tie it. He doesn't know how to read the directions but he thinks he can figure it out for himself by doing it. The only problem with that is that he doesn't get it right and the ship drifts out to sea.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Night I Flunked my Field Trip - Good Book, June 14, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Night I Flunked My Field Trip #5 (Hank Zipzer) (Paperback)
I liked how the author had the idea to make Hank lose his permission slip to go on the field trip with his friends. Because his mean teacher gave him only one hour to look for it. It was funny how the captain on the ship made them mop pee off the decks.

I think I liked, "Help I'm trapped in 4th grade" a little bit better. Because it had more funny parts.
