5.0 out of 5 stars A stupendous book about a daring girl during World War 1., December 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Night Flyers (American Girl History Mysteries) (Paperback)
I only read one of the "American Girl History Mysteries" and already I think this one is my favorite. The way it is written is so captivating and the plot is really neat. Sorry, but I can't tell you too much about this book or it will take away the surprise, so I will start you off like this..... It's about, Pam Lowder, an eleven year old girl, who is growing up in North Carolina with her mother, during World War 1. Pam owns a loft of homing pigeons, that was given to her by her father before he went off to war. The rare thing about these critters is they have the ability to fly through the night! Many people start to get suspicious when a man with a foreign accent comes to town. Could he be a spy sent by the enemy to plan some awful thing against the government? That's what Pam starts to think on Chap. 2. Yes, that quick in the book. It's a fast paced type of book, but it's not like some fast paced books that jump around from place to place and you don't know what's going on. No, this book sticks with what it's about, but fast in moving to get to the center of the situation--the truth. The book isn't only about that strange man, but what really makes Pam fight to get to the answer, is when her best pigeons start to disappear! Oh, I better stop before I tell you too much! Getting carried away there. Well I guess it's up to you, Pam, and Pam's animal friends to unlock the truth. Don't worry it wont be boring. It's jam packed with fun, mystery, and tons of excitement!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another High Flyer, March 29, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Night Flyers (American Girl History Mysteries) (Paperback)
Pam Lowder is a twelve-year-old girl with a special gift for handling animals. She and her father raise the best homing pigeons on the North Carolina coast. One reason they are the best is that her father has developed a way to train their birds to fly at night. But the year is 1918. Pam's father is a soldier in World War I and is far away in Europe. When a stranger with a foreign accent shows up in the area, some people suspect he is a spy. Pam becomes even more suspicious when the stranger offers her a lot of money for her pigeons and, after she refuses to sell, the birds start disappearing.

This entry in the "history mystery" series won an award for best children's mystery of the year 2000. My daughter still likes "The Smuggler's Treasure" best of the six books that we have now completed in this series, but I can vouch for the fact that she has enjoyed them all. Like all the others, this one gives the young reader an appealing young heroine, an engaging story, and some solid historical background. All in all, a very good book for girls in the 9 to 12 age group. Highly recommended.
