Sportswriter Kate Henry (The Dead Pull Hitter; Safe at Home) follows the Toronto Titans to Sunland, Florida, for spring training--but she's barely settled in before Lucy Cartwright, a busty, lusty cub reporter who'd slept with half the team, is found shot to death on the beach. Sheriff Barwell taps young rookie Domingo Avila as suspect number one and jails him, but Lucy's friends are convinced that Avila didn't do it--and Kate is soon awash in other possibilities, including the sheriff himself (whom Lucy rebuffed the year before) and Lucy's lecherous stepdad. Kate, with the help of a chatty female lawyer and the editor of the local paper, soon has Avila released and is focusing on Lucy's parentage- -until a chance remark leads her to a confrontation with the killer and a spouse's attempt at a coverup. Not a home run, but a solid double, with baseball tidbits nicely balanced with romance and clues.
