Workmanlike murder mystery,
By F. J. Harvey "Cricket ,country music and a go... (Birmingham England) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Night Games (Hardcover)
The author's name -by the way-is Collin Wilcox and NOT as stated in the heading Wilcox Collin.I hope this error does not lead people with a love of crime writing to overlook this fine ,second string practitioner of the genre .
The Harleys-James and Katherine -have what is euphemistically described as an "open marriage".While sharing the same luxury home ,they have separate sleeping arrangements and both openly sleep with other people .James ,an influential political consultant is brutally murdered ,his throat cut ,and Katherine claims she saw who did it - a burglar she foiled in the act of robbing the house .The police ,lead by co-Commander of Homicide ,Lieutenant Frank Hastings are called in and quickly pick up a suspect who is identified in a line up by Katherine .Neither Hastings nor his colleague ,Friedman ,a Nero Wolfe like figure with a distaste for the physical exertion required by field work, are convinced that she is telling the truth .Indeed ,she is not for she could not possibly have seen the murder as she was with a lover at the same time .Suspicion falls on Amy ,a nubile babysitter who was paid for kinky sex by the deceased and before the case is resolved sordid details of child abuse and molestation are revealed . The book is well plotted ,nicely written and with good sharp characterization especially in the contrasting personalities of the lead cops .Stir in some crisp meditations on the corrupt nature of modern high society and you have a solid genre read which is only a notch or two below the absoslute peak of genre writing |
