From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?A tender tale, gentle in pacing, spirit, and tone, revolving around a Ute Indian traditional springtime dance. When a girl brushes her shawl against a boy, he must accept her invitation to dance. The Cat Man oversees the activities, keeping order and making sure the men and boys respond. In this story, a young girl, Autumn Eyetoo, proudly dresses in a pink-fringed shawl for her first Bear Dance. With blushing courage, she approaches a fellow her age, but he takes off running out of reach of the Cat Man. She sits down with her friends, discouraged, hot, and dusty. As the day draws to dusk, Autumn braves the other girls' shock and giggles by approaching one of the old men sitting out the festivities with, "I hear you are a wonderful dancer, Grandfather." He replies, "It has been a long time since these eyes have seen much, but my feet remember plenty," and they step out into the night. Full-page batik illustrations, though strong and bold, cannot match the dancing movement of the story. Earth hues of gold, orange, yellow, and brown grace the desert springtime setting. A unique offering.?Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
