Its real easy........put 9 of the best guitar players from the era of the 60's--70's together for a live concert and what comes out is one of the greatest concerts ever to be held. If you lived the times between '67--'77 then you know what I'm talking about. Mountain, 10 years after, wishbone ash, yes, climax blues band, the doors, spirit, get the picture! You may not know all the names but I'm sure you know the bands. So, if you are one of the people I'm talking about, this is a must for your collection. Great songs, great guitars, from some of the greatest guitar players ever to walk the face of the earth.

Leslie West's (of Mountain) version of Theme From An Imaginary Western was worth the price of admission for me. Maybe the greatest example of guitar tone in the history of the rock guitar. Rest of the songs also glisten... this is a true keeper.
Go to thegreatfatsbies dot com and see this song played live on Mountain's fan club video section.

The great Alvin Lee (only singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and lead guitarist extrodinaire), makes a rare appearance (you really need to see the video), and absolutely gives the boys a guitar lesson.
It is really funny on Lee's second show, when he motions for the bass player to follow him to play together, but the bass player can't keep up with him. At the end of a show, when Alvin Lee, takes the lead, when it is all hands on deck, and starts some fantastic, good, ole rock n roll, with some Chuck Berry songs and standing next to him and directing traffic is Leslie West. To see and here them together is great. Since they were really cooking, the stage fills up, as some of those who weren't going to join everyone, came on stage as Alvin Lee led the group and Leslie would point to how should take a solo. Amazing. I hope you can see the video and see the man, who is still rockin, better than ever NOW, as Alvin blows away the audience and the other musicians. After Alvin, was the most dynamic act at Woodstock, playing "I'm Going Home", with his band mostly clapping, and that closeups of him on the giant screen, with that amazing original Rock n Roll and Rock a Billy solo, was SOOOOO successful, that he didn't want to be put on video any more. Alvin and his backup musicians Ten years After (who are really mediocre at best), still have the record for the most tour dates in the U.S. I hope you got to see him. PLEASE check out Alvin Lee In Tennessee (should have won a grammy), all original Alvin Lee songs, and done with the good ole boys, who backed Elvis in his pre-Mr. Vegas days, and is fantastic to hear Alvin with a great band. He still tours in Europe, at times. This is fun stuff.

This is one of my favourites, it's a pity that Leslie West was not 30 years old today. His performance in Theme From An Imaginary Western is a masterclass.
For those who only like "virtous" guitar-players (Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads) i recommend a hearing of these old guys, probably guitarists with the best of the techniques (Steve Howe, Randy California, Steve Hunter,), i only miss Steve Hackett. A complete must. |
