Ian Vance Bigelow may have started out his life as the illegitimate grandson of a Scottish Laird but he rose to become a Bounty Hunter and US Marshall known as the Preacher. Ian was as full of the Holy Spirit as he was weapons and would use both as the situation deemed appropriate. When this tough bounty hunter collides with Maggie Freeman a sassy spitfire of a woman, he is not sure what hit him.

Maggie is under arrest for a crime she did not commit and Ian is trying to haul her from one part of the country to the next to get the issue resolved. He did not ask for this job but on the way back to Wyoming he might as well take care of her and get a train ride out of the deal. However, Maggie is not going quietly onto that train and her goal is escape not some trumped up charge she cannot beat.

Both Maggie and Ian know of discrimination and disgrace brought upon them by simple being people of color who are specifically of mixed descent. Both of them have taken the cards they have been dealt and made a respectable life for themselves. The predetermined mindset of people has been used, as life lessons not something to weigh them down but make them who they have become.

The journey on the train is tough with every city having a story and the people they meet sharing their history. The time draws out with one train after another but the more they are together the more Ian and Maggie realize they are meant to be together. But the past always comes back to find you and when it does will it be the salvation of this couple or the undoing?

This book will have readers sighing over the romance and amazed by the historical significance of the story, unable to put the book down. Beverly Jenkins is brilliant at rolling history around an historical romance with characters that make us aware of how much those before us had to overcome to bring us to the place we are today.

Where to start.....This is the first book by Beverly Jenkins I have ever read, and honestly, I would have missed out on an amazing read, had I not attended the Fall in Love Tour and heard her speak. To be BRUTALLY honest, I bought books by the other two authors and that is all I planned on buying UNTIL I heard Ms. Jenkins speak. After hearing her discuss her journey to becoming a writer, her passion for historical accuracy and her FANS speak. I was intrigued. I bought Night Hawk, because she said after 10 years of fans begging, demanding the Preacher get his story, she finally gave it to them, the HOT COVER didn't hurt my decision either. I am so glad I went to the FILT and bought this book, I never would have bought it otherwise. Reason being I burned myself out as a young adult reading every historical I could get my hands on. After reading Night Hawk I will be reading more of Ms. Jenkins books, as well as dipping my toes in the historical genre again.

Now about Night Hawk - I loved this book so much I could go on and on. So to keep my review from turning into a book about how much I loved Night Hawk, I will try to keep it simple.

Night Hawk is a historical western set in 1889 and clearly demonstrates the lure of the Old West, how people could go West and start over, improve their lives.

The Preacher (no he is not really a preacher for those of you who do not like to read about clergy falling in love) Ian Vance was born in Scotland to a single Scottish woman, his father was a Black seaman with the British Navy. Ian's grandfather turned his back on both of them. Ian's mother was a mistress to a rich man, because of this Ian had an excellent education. Ian moved to America and ended up becoming an outlaw, then Bounty Hunter and Deputy Marshall.

All you have to say is his name and that along. Well I tell after reading this book I can say that Preacher was worth the wait and your will not be disappointed. Ian (Preacher) & Maggie was something else they was good for each other. The first review did a great of giving you the highlights of the book and she was right on point.

I will say that I laugh, cried and cheered. Once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down, we learned at lot about Preacher and his back ground. I recommend this book. Yes Preacher man knows how to make them scream......

Enjoy
Louise

Maggie and Ian have me all stirred up for adventure and romance. Ian is a bounty hunter, deputy sheriff and a preacher. Yes, he can beat the slop out of a bad guy while at the same time he can quote a scripture from the Song of Solomon in the Holy Bible. Plus, Ian is very, very handsome. He's a man of color from Scotland. However, the novel, Night Hawk, is a story that takes place out west in Denver, Kansas and Wyoming. Even though cuff links have Maggie linked tightly to Night Hawk all sorts of shenanigans take place. There is danger from old, forgotten enemies. Also, at times Maggie is lost from Ian. One time she finds herself in a brothel with other women who don't want to be there. They are there against their will serving up their bodies with a bottle of whiskey and a dance or song. This part of the novel made me think a lot about human trafficking in our day and time. How awful it must be to find yourself taken somewhere against your will to do a service that takes away your dignity and leaves you hardened and ashamed.

Beverly Jenkins is one of those authors who always leads me in different directions. When I met Maggie and Ian, I knew that they were bound to fall in love. However, I didn't expect to learn about the plight of the Chinese in the Nineteenth century nor did I expect to learn about the Kaw, a Native American Tribe. "The Kaw were forced into Indian Territory in'73. When they were removed there were less than five hundred members of a tribe..."kawnation

I felt sad and happy when Maggie and Ian married. I thought my adventure had ended. I knew Maggie would become a good school teacher. I felt that Ian would want to put his gun slinging days behind him. Well, I had a surprise coming my way. Ian and Maggie's life starts out more than rough.
