4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of steamy, obsessive sex, w/plot (unusual for some erotica!)
I enjoyed this book! More plot than usual for an erotica, and certainly a lot of hot, steamy sex! I liked the ending, and loved how the author could combine the basic plot without to much distracting detail, plus give us chapters-long sex scenes! The writing is a little tiny bit weak-awkward phraseologies, but in her favor, few cliches'.Nothing glaring or too distracting...

This book is not what I thought it would be. The hero seemed like he needed professional help at times,I mean there was no story just sex during the whole book. I had to force myself to read all of it.This was my first time reading anything from this authur and it will be the last.Save your money!

I liked the ending, and loved how the author could combine the basic plot without to much distracting detail, plus give us chapters-long sex scenes! The writing is a little tiny bit weak-awkward phraseologies, but in her favor, few cliches'.Nothing glaring or too distracting. Harper just has an unadorned style, but I'd like to see her get a bit more descriptive. Some times the sex acts just came off clinically, and not as sensual as they could have with these two characters. That said, I found it a page-turner and its going on the keeper shelf. I'm anxious to read more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Good Bondage Vonna Harper D/s Story, September 19, 2010

3.5 stars. The second half dragged some due to what I felt was a relentless repetition of the basic conflict between the two. But the first half was great and I still enjoyed the book and was anxious to find out how it would be resolved. If you're interested in exploring a bondage/forced seduction fantasy, you'll want to check this one out-- or try Captive Warrior, Spoils of War and Roped Heat--they have similar plots. I also liked Dangerous Ride, Scarlet Cavern (heavier BDSM), Dark Touch (dark in general) by Vonna Harper, not that I've read all her books (yet). P.S. This is an erotic romance, expect graphic sex.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read but..., June 22, 2009
This review is from: Night of the Hawk (Kindle Edition)
I found the sex scenes in this book to be hot and more than I expected them to be. However, there were parts that seemed just to far fetched for me to get into. Although I can appreciate the beliefs of Native Americans about the animal and spiritual world, it was very hard for me to go from one page of hot sex to the next page where the hero is being taken over by an animal spirit. All in all I found it a good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different story..., January 17, 2012
This review is from: Night of the Hawk (Paperback)
Reporter Smokey Rivers shows up in Storm Bay, investigating a string of murders. Spotting a picture of a stunning hawk in a gallery, she's determined to find its artist. But after meeting Mato Hawk, Smokey realizes nothing is as it seems, not even her overwhelming attraction to the dark, brooding Native American.

Night of the Hawk is a dark, sometimes disturbing tale of one woman's struggle with her own desires and her fear for her safety. Under the guise of BDSM, there are elements of nonconsensual sex, kidnapping and even the threat to Smokey's very existence. This story is not for the faint of heart and while there are many sexual scenes within this book, some might debate the existence of romance between Smokey and Mato at all.

The story is...different, and a lot darker than the blurb describes.

3.0 out of 5 stars To finish, or not to finish? (2.5 Stars), May 5, 2011
This review is from: Night of the Hawk (Paperback)
That is the question I asked myself several times concerning this story-- "Night of the Hawk". To me, this is not a "feel good" erotic romance. While I can't say that I've read every type of BDSM story out there, this one is by far my least favorite of the ones I have read.
Bondage with a willing submissive is one thing, but being bound, gagged, stripped naked, kidnapped & sexually teased against one's will (which is what happens to Smokey) is not my idea of romance, nor BDSM, which involves the consent of both partners.

Smokey comes to Storm Bay to investigate the disappearance of a land developer, as well as a series of mysterious deaths over a longer period of time.
Mato wants to prevent Smokey from exposing secrets of the past that could ultimately destroy his people's land. His Hawk Spirit tells him he needs to kill Smokey, but Mato decides to kidnap Smokey, with plans to become her captor and master, to "Control her, Change her". How will he accomplish that? Yes, this is where the BDSM comes in at.

The majority of this story is about the internal battles that Smokey & Mato each have to face, mostly Smokey's.
Smokey's internal battle, which we read about repeatedly, UGH!, is the fact that she's turned on by Mato's aggressiveness when she shouldn't be since, after all, he did kidnap her. But, I guess if someone's stimulating you sexually, bringing you to the verge of climax, then stopping... well, who wouldn't want to be mistreated just to have sex? Oh, wait a minute, NOT ME! Smokey constantly arguing with herself as to why she shouldn't want to have sex over and over again with her "Captor" gets very annoying.
Mato's internal battle, which we read very little about from him, is that he doesn't want to kill Smokey. He's battling the responsibility of giving in & becoming a "slave" to his Hawk Spirit. He continues to seek Hawk Spirits guidance, & when Hawk Spirit seems to take control of him, guess what brings him back to human thinking? Yep, Smokey figured it out--she has to have sex with Mato. Oh, Gee, the things a woman has to go through.
Oh, & while she's having sex, not "making love", with Mato, we are blessed to read the thoughts running through her mind..."She shouldn't want this, but, Oh God, she doesn't want him to stop. She needs to connect with him", and so on, and so on.

Yes, there is quite a bit of sex. No, I don't believe they ever make love or connect with each other emotionally.
I know I could have put this book down & not finished it, but I try to finish any book that I start. There's always a chance that the ending will make up for the parts I didn't like. For me, however, with this story, that was not the case. It's not a tragic ending, but an unfulfilling ending.

I don't recommend this book, but I won't say you shouldn't read it. I will say that, unless you're familiar with Vonna Harper's writing style & you get into this kind of bondaged, forced captive sex, you might want to borrow this book before you put a lot of money into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Night of the Hawk, September 16, 2009
This review is from: Night of the Hawk (Paperback)
Reporter Smokey Powers is on the trail of what could be the biggest story of her career. A series of unexplained deaths in the small Oregon community of Storm Bay has stirred up her instincts and she is determined to get to the bottom of it. There is just one small problem. The information she uncovers points to Mato Hawk--the sexiest man she has ever met.

Mato knows his role and responsibilities--protect the land he holds sacred and its people. The newest threat to the town is not only the proposed resort that will destroy the river and surrounding forest, it is Smokey's potential story that could expose secrets best left buried. With his Hawk Spirit as his guide, Mato does what he must to eliminate any and all threats but when it comes to Smokey, the only action Mato can think of to take involves her being naked, ready and willing--not necessarily all three.

Smokey fell in lust with Mato instantly but in the long run she got a lot more than she bargained for. Kidnapped, tied up and ravished, she realized the man she could not wait to tear up the sheets with was a man divided. Mato's battle with his Hawk spirit was intense and caused him to do things to Smokey that some readers might find objectionable. That being said, if you're looking for a dark, deeply erotic story, you can't go wrong with Night of the Hawk.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting BDSM romance, January 30, 2009
This review is from: Night of the Hawk (Paperback)
Her investigation into the serial killings leads reporter Smokey Rivers to Storm Bay, Oregon investigating a string of murders. In an art gallery Smokey is fascinated by a photo of a beautiful hawk in flight. Thus she enthusiastically meets the photographer Mato Hawk.

Mato is attractive to the tough skinned journalist who he thinks hides a passionate soft inside. He begins to dominate her turning her increasingly into his submissive. She enjoys each spin he takes them as he controls more and submits more. However, Mato hides his real agenda by his BDSM seduction as he wants to keep her from her inquiry, but finds himself trapped by his desire for her.

NIGHT OF THE HAWK is an interesting erotic romance in which Mato kidnaps an initially unwelcoming Smokey and seduces her through dominating her until she turns submissive (Stockholm syndrome perhaps). At times their sexual relationship goes beyond BDSM romance into forced sexual captivity, but that adds realism to the mix. Although deeper psychological insight into the courageous investigative reporter seeking a killer but though frightened tacitly submissively accepting her kidnapper's dominance would have enhanced the plot, this is an intriguing erotica, just not for everyone.
