This book was a great book. I like the way Trent was helped by Nick. One thing I didn't like was the violence. I am not a big fan of basketball, or any other sport, but this book really touched me. I would recommend this book to anyone even if they aren't a lover of sports. That is what I thought about Night Hoops.

Carl Dueker creates a well-written story about a young boy's love for the game of basketball and his everyday life. Nick Abbott is a sophomore in high school and wants to be the star basketball player more than anything.
He faces several problems in his life. For example, his parents are going through a divorce. Also, Nick has to face his angry neighbor, Trent Dawson, who is also on the basketball team. The boys start to become friends as they practice playing basketball every night on Nick's backyard court. Nick starts to grow up in many ways on the court and off of it while he is dealing with his new life changes. The main message of the book is that it is very important to make adjustments during the course of a game, as well as, to learn that adjustments are important in life, too.
Night Hoops was a really great book and I recommend this to all boys. This is a great novel about basketball and friendship. I really understood this book and what Nick was thinking the whole way through. Carl Deuker shoots and scores with this book, Night Hoops!

4.0 out of 5 stars Night Hoops, January 27, 2005

This book has good points and bad points. One of the good points is the fact that its a story about two completely different people who are brought together by their common interest in basketball. Another good point is that one of the characters father keeps pressuring him into basketball but instead he follows his dreams and plays the trumpet in the school band. Some bad points are that the book is too predictable. For example like they win a basketball game by a buzzer beater shot. Another bad point is that the book moves kind of slowly. I still enjoyed the book very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomest Book, February 12, 2002

Basketball, Passion and friendship is what this book is about. Nick Abbott is your average basketball loving 9th grader who decides to try out for the varsity team at Bothell High School. But just like the game, Nick's life has some twists and tuns, some low points and high ones. How will he handle the neighborhood bullies, Trent Dawson and his crazy brother Zack? And what about his father and his trumpet loving older brother? MOST important, what about the part that decides his future, the tryouts? This book kept pulling me in, and I wanted more. Nick's life revolves around basketball, but with it come some unexpected surprises, that make you love Nick and his world even more. From a girl's view, this book deserves five stars, and I think that a guy who loves, or even doesn't love basketball, would really like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by Brian "360Swinger" S., March 30, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Night Hoops (Paperback)
I felt ashamed during reading this book. In the book, Night Hoops the main character Nick tries hard to go into varsity basketball and tries hard to be friend with Trent. After reading this book, I learned that working is the shortcut to success.
Nick gets bad news that his parents are divorcing, but he still practices with his friends and gets ready for tryouts. Nick makes the team, same as his friend Luke. Also his neighbor Trent makes the team and everybody in the team hates him because Trent and his brother are bullies. Trent begins to come to Nick's backyard at night to play basketball. Suddenly Nick joins and they become friends. Nick and Trent begin to play basketball as a team and they win the championship. Trent also thanks Nick for helping out with his school work and his personal things about his brother. They become best friends.
I recommend this book to kids who love basketball or kids that have problems with their friends. Also this book never makes you bored and it's a great story. It was also great that a normal nice kid like Nick was the main character.

I thought Night Hoops was a brilliant book. I wouldnt change a word of it! Carl Deuker has written a great series of books but this is by far the best book he's written. The way he described the different characters and what happened in all of Nick Abbot's basketball games was the reson I didn't want to put it down and I hope you wont either.

Night Hoops Book Review

Night Hoops is a good compelling story about a kid named Nick and his rivals Trent, but then both of them make the Bothell basketball team. When the team starts out the season they didn't have a good start, but once Nick and Trent slowly become friends the season starts coming together.
In the over-all rating I give it a five star rating. I really got interested in the book it kept me up late into the night reading. It really kept me interested and I never wanted to stop but unfortunately I had to.

4.0 out of 5 stars I say it is a great and exiting book, February 28, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Night Hoops (Hardcover)
As you enter the book of Night Hoops you will forget all other books you have read in the the past. As you step into Nick Abbott's life it goes beyond the game of basketball. It is the good moments and the bad for Nick and his friend like Luke. This mostly takes place on and of the at Nick's house in Seattle Org. where all of Nick's friends come to play, because he does have the best court there. This book also has its share of of diobolic characters such as the Dawsons pertaining to to Zack and Trent that live right nextdoor to Nick, his mom and his older brother Scott. Nick fights through having divorced parents and almost never gets to see his Dad anymore, which is hard for Nick to do because his Dad is allso in love with the game of basketball and he taught him the way to play the game. When Trent and Nick were playing basketball at Nick's house one day and Zack called Trent over to show him something that was in his pocket but Nick could't see before Zack ran off.I won't tell you what was in Zack's pocket or any other details in this very powerfull book I hope you are going to find out on your own.

Nick Abbott is a great basketball player, but his dad does not see how good he really is. Nick has a single goal, to start on the varsity basketball team. Nicks dad pushes him and his brother Scott so hard he builds a basketball court in their backyard. Scott and Nick play one on one everyday until other varsity players show up. Nick is kicked off the court because he isn't good enough. One night, Nick's parents are in a fight and Nick's dad decides to leave. Nick's dad told him that night to be the star. He wanted him take the winning shot if he had the chance.
Nick is helped out one day by Luke, so Nick wanted to repay him for that some how. Nick is working very hard and when Scott stops playing basketball for band and Katya, attention is turned to Nick from his dad. Nick has a shot at winning the Championship with Luke. Trent may not be there to help, so it's all up to Nick.
The book made me always continue reading. It was so exciting reading about how good someone can be, but no one will realize it till they prove their self. It made me learn that someone may always do the wrong thing but when something important for a lot of people, they do the right thing. What will Nick do when the time comes to win the championship?

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Night Hoops (Paperback)
Carl Deuker's fourth book for young adults is another winner filled with fast paced action and surprises all along the way. Night Hoops is a fantastic book for sports lovers and Mike Lupica fans. All four of his books were nominated for ALA best book for young adults.

Nick Abbot always thought of Trent Dawson as a punk or a thug who was always getting himself into deep trouble. But when Nick Abbot only wants to make it on the school basketball team at school. But so is Trent Dawson and Nick tries to learn more about him than his family saying that Trent is a bad influence because his brother gets into to much trouble and his mom is a bad influence. But Nick doesn't care what he hears because when the coach tells him to help Trent or sit on the bench he decides to keep his spot on the team and become friends with Trent. While trying to figure this out Nick needs to show his family the same thing. But it gets harder to do when Trent makes a big mistake and Nick needs to help Trent see his mistake.

By the end of Night Hoops you will see the friendship that Nick and Trent have becomes stronger than ever. It will keep you thinking hard about this book from front to back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Parco's Review, May 29, 2006
This review is from: Night Hoops (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book because I have interested in basketball too. This story is very exciting because things that happen in this story is very realistic. It keeps me interested all the time by having unexpected changes in the plot.

This book is about a kid called Nick. He has a father that loves basketball and puts all his hopes of basketball into his sons, Nick and his brother Scott. His father is too passionate about basketball which results in arguements with Nick's mom and divorce. Scott has a basketballer's physiques so thats why his father spends more time training him. But Scott realizes that his interest isn't basketball but is music. So he disapoints his father. So instead, Nick is focused on being trained. He makes the schools varsity team with a friend of his, Luke. They enjoy the practices and soon this out of city tournament comes. But the school can't afford to bring all the players with them so few were left out. Unluckily, the main character of this book, Nick, is left out. So he starts to train himself and during this period. Trent, who is a known to be a trouble maker then becomes very motivated in basketball. So they practice together in Nick's basketball court. After a while, Trent changed his bad attitudes and he appologized to the coach. Then Nick and Trent becomes good partners on and off the court and the finals game came. The end of the story will be saved for YOU to explore.

This is a good book because it truly shows brotherhood and heart for basketball. Most teenagers nowadays definitely value these two things. They play a sport that they love, they play for a team and create bonds between their team mates. This applies to me too, so I see a connection between Nick and me. If this applies to YOU too, this book is definitely a good choice!
