Book Description

November 30, 2004

From award-winning author Charlotte Hughes, a classic tale of romantic suspense finally available again.

In a small town, everybody knows everybody...

The local good-time girl has just been brutally murdered, shattering the tranquillity of Lee Cates′s sleepy Southern hometown. Everyone in Comfrey is relieved when an outsider who′d spent that fatal night with the victim is arrested--until it begins to look like maybe he′s not guilty.

Rashly probing into the murder, the blindly loyal Lee learns that not everybody loved the fast-living woman--though too many men had. Then one night Lee′s business is vandalized, and more mysterious events ensue. And Lee realizes--maybe too late--that in a community this small, one sister′s secrets may lead to the other′s death...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Before Lee Cates's sister, Lucy, was murdered, her once disturbingly beautiful face was slashed to ribbons. Three apparently implausible suspects emerge in the siblings' small, closely knit South Carolina town of Comfrey. Impatient with the progress of the investigation by her cousin, Sheriff Holden Cates, Lee strikes out on her own against his wishes. Though this is billed as a romantic suspense novel, the whodunit facet is given rather short shrift here. Characters are believable if not particularly compelling, but the heroine's vaunted feistiness is undermined each time she is rescued from harrowing situations (most of which she's placed herself in) by the handsome male stalwart, Jack McCall, who keeps appearing out of the blue and in the nick of time. Even so, Hughes's (And After That, the Dark) clear language is a pleasure to read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many loose ends leftover at the end of the book, May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Kills (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoyed the plot line and the mystery kept my attention. But I was very disappointed at the end when I felt like I was left holding the bag. Two people were implicated in the death of the sister and (give me a break) their involment was never explained but left for us to figure out. Instead we were handed a sugar coated fairy tale ending.

Who cares who did it as long as the love interest survives?

This is my first book by Ms. Hughes. I might give her a second look. But I didn't like the way this one ended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shallow, February 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Kills (Mass Market Paperback)
The story plot on this book was so shallow and predictable. Totally unbelievable. Does the author really expect us to believe that a high cost private high school would allow an accused murderer chaprone a school dance? A real disappointment when one expected a thriller to read on a rainy winter night!

2.0 out of 5 stars yuck!, April 11, 2006
This review is from: Night Kills (Mass Market Paperback)
Charlotte Hughes has some writing talent, but the plot and characters she created for this book have no redeeming qualities. If you're looking for shock or disgust, have at it, but don't expect to feel any sympathy or empathy. The characters just aren't worth it.
