Ray Price's "Night Life" spotlights the pedal steel guitar,
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Life (Audio CD)
I was in college in 1963 when the LP version of Ray Price's "Night Life" was introduced by Columbia. Its vocal music exposed me to the wonderful voice of Mr. Ray Price and its instrumental music exposed me to the outstanding playing of the pedal steel guitar by Mr. Buddy Emmons. In all these intervening years, I have never waivered for my support of both of these outstanding country music stars. Every song on this album is done with such taste that it really represents a special showcase for each of these artists. Ray's voice at this point in his career was beginning to display his own individuality away from the earlier Hank Williams sound. Buddy's playing, including his smooth introduction to the "Night Life" song, put him in a class all by himself. As an aspiring pedal steel guitarist myself, his playing was extremely important to me as it displayed the then boundries this instrument was capable of. I haven't heard the CD version of this album but if it captures the spirit of Ray Price, Buddy Emmons and the other sidemen on the album, it's certainly worth your consideration. Regards, Al Gershen

Ray Price at his best,

This was the first Ray Price original re-issue I got, and it sounds as good now as in the mid-60's when I had the vinyl. The title song has long been my favorite country song, and I've performed it many times myself. The vocal gymnastics of Ray Price coupled with the most creative steel work ever done by Buddy Emmons make this, in my opinion, the best produced country song ever. Willie Nelson's lyrics and chord progessions are also incredible. The only negative on this is the lengthy introduction at the beginning. It's interesting the first couple of times, but soon makes you fast forward to the real song. The rest of the album is superb, especially
"Pride" and the jazzy "Bright Lights and Blonde Haired Women" with more amazing Buddy Emmons steel work. This is a must for any Ray Price fan.

With Ray Price's vocals, great compositions by many of Nashville's best writers of the day, a great band that showcases the brilliant steel guitar work of Buddy Emmons, "Night Life" was far ahead of its time.
I listened to this album over and over and over when I was a kid, then waited seemingly forever to find it on Amazon. It occupies a home on my iPhone and my Zune (yes, I prefer Zune). This is a brilliant album, with classic honky-tonk songs, wonderful vocals and excellent musicianship. Almost 50 years after its debut, it holds up very, very well.

The smooth sound of Ray Price, the Cherokee Cowboy, will have you listening to these songs over and over. I grew up listening to Ray Price but I found some songs here that I wasn't familiar with or hadn't heard in a long time. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the depth and feeling that Ray Price brings to these songs.
This is a great collection for those interested in a smooth honky tonk sound. The oldies are the goodies and this collection proves it.
