I love the design of Nicholas Blechman's Night Light. It features bright, bold transportation pictures of cars, trucks, planes, boats and buses. It also functions really well as a first counting book through an innovative use of cut out holes and lots of black space. We begin with a solid black two page spread featuring the text "1 light, shining bright?" on one side and a cut out hole on the other side with a white light shining through. Turn the page and we see a large, bold picture of a train emerging from a tunnel that is sure to please even the youngest story listeners. We are back to black again for the next two page spread, this time featuring the text "2 lights, hovering in flight" The opposite page features two tiny holes with red and green peeking through. Turn the page, and you once again are treated to a bold, colorful two page spread, this time featuring a helicopter.
The design is perfect as we get to count all the way up to ten before ending with another visit to the number 1 featuring our young driver/pilot in bed with his night light. This is an excellent choice for any young transportation fan just learning to count. The pages are sturdy and will be able to withstand it lots of little finger pokes, because you know kids will be fascinated by those die-cut holes. The lights are easy to count, making this an excellent teaching tool. I only wish the artist would have included the number word, and this would have been totally complete. An exciting effort and an enthusiastic recommend.

A fabulous book for kids! Night Light is a great bed time story book that features great illustrations, counting from 1 to 10, and a guessing game. Featured on each page are vehicle lights. Those lights start at one and go up to ten the further you get into the story. With each turn of the page, readers are given easy clues, and a set number of light to help guess what kind of vehicle the lights go to. When each paged is turned, readers discover what vehicle the lights on the previous page are from.
With the simple, bold colors, the lights stand out and appear to be lights in the dark. This adds to the over all appeal of this book. Keeping with bold colors, and simple illustrations make the pages easy on the eyes, and allow the illustrated vehicle, and it's lights to stand out. From construction vehicles, to a train, a plane, a firetruck, boat, a car and more, this book is one young fans of all things that go, will enjoy.

This is the first book my 2 1/2 year old requested to be read again and again...back to back. He enjoyed putting his fingers on the circles and counting the lights, then saying, "what is it?" before turning the page. Even after reading it 3 times back to back, he delighted in turning that page to discover what vehicle belonged to those lights teased on the prior page. In subsequent readings, he loved looking at the how the holes for the lights were incorporated into the illustrations on the next page, such as a telescope for the ship captain or fishing holes for the snowmen. You never know what book is going to spark that love of reading. If it's this book that we'll be reading over and over, I'm happy to oblige.

This world is filled with vehicles , each with a specific job to do. This picture book highlights are few of these as they work at night. The book features cut away pages that give a clue to what the next page will show. I would recommend this book to parents and caregivers of kids ages birth to 3. It's a fun way to teach them the concept of addition. The pages are made a thick card stock. They should last through numerous reads.

The format and concept are brilliant enough. What I don't fully get is that of the dozens of books in my home for our five-month-old daughter, this is her outright favorite. She lights up (no pun intended) every time she sees the cover and loves when we read it to her, as her attentive grin tends to keep going the whole time. We received it as a gift, and I will undoubtedly buy it for other young and future readers.

Nicholas Blechman's book is a work of art in its own right. Not only is it daringly stark (in the best sense) but it is brilliantly conceived. And, graphically it is very very clever. Each turn of the page reveals a delightful surprise. It is one of the few books that I don't mind rereading 100 times to my four year old grandsons - they learn to count and I enjoy their participation. Consider it a perfect baby present - it is right up there with all the old favorites.

A smart and stunning book, encourages counting and covers a range of transportation vehicles (helicopter, snow plower, taxi, etc.) - my todder son loves counting and vehicles and we just adore this book. Highly recommended.

This is a simple counting book (to ten) with bold primary colors and cleverly engineered cut-out designs featuring different forms of transportation. We have read this many times, and it has become a favorite. For any child who loves cars, trains, boats, and construction equipment, this is a wonderful choice.
