5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful, December 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Lights (Audio CD)
The soul and the depth that Mulligan, Brookmyer, Farmer and Hall exude is awe inspiring. The recording is very mellow. The tempos range from kinda slow to really slow. But the playing has such intense feeling; it just cuts right through you. When I finish listening to this cd, I feel like crying. Not because the playing is so melancholy, but because I don't believe that I'll ever hear something so deep and beautiful as this recording. This is as good as it gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars GORGEOUS MUSIC!!!, March 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Lights (Audio CD)
Mulligan was one of my favorite musicians. Not only the BEST on baritone, but an incredible writer and extraordinary arranger. On Night Lights, you have the "mellow" Mulligan refined and distilled to his best. And Art Farmer & Bob Brookmeyer are so "perfect". I used to hear them all, live, and only Brookmeyer still survives. Timeless and beautiful music that will be enjoyed forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, June 13, 2003
This review is from: Night Lights (Audio CD)
I saw this recommended in an essential list compiled by NPR. Art Farmer as a side man was enough of a hook, but after listening to this music, I'm looking at Mulligan's other recordings. This is a beautiful piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One, February 5, 2009
This review is from: Night Lights (Audio CD)
I call this 2 a.m. jazz where you just sit back in a comfy chair with a nice glass of wine and let this mellow music float over you. I first heard this album on vinyl and the LP has a different cover but the same exceptional music. To those who I have played it for I have not had anyone say they have not enjoyed it. Don't miss this one!

The Title song, Night Lights was written by Gerry Mulligan. It is a fine start and finish, shining brightly over the other tunes. Recorded over 40 years ago, this CD is as crisp, inviting and good to listen to, as if the musicians had just stepped out of the recording studio.
"In the wee small hours of the morning" never sounded better and will have you thinking of times spent in quiet places, listening to music played beautifully.

Smooth and harmonious sound to close your eyes and get into the music and have long moments of musical pleasure. Improsives
almost beautiful as the melodies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Background Music for a Bachelor's Pad, September 26, 2007
This review is from: Night Lights (Audio CD)
While "Night Lights" would be perfect for a romantic evening, it also stands up well to serious examination. The original Philips vinyl LP is fairly rare now, but was one of my most valued jazz albums. It sure is nice that the jazz catalog CD re-issue wave is including this beautiful work of art. Bobby Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Jim Hall on guitar, Art Farmer on trumpet and of course Gerry Mullgan on baritone sax are at the top of their form in this early 1960's small big band date. This was recorded shortly after the Concert Jazz Band period for Mulligan and further testifies to his abilities as a top-notch arranger. You might also check out these earlier big band recordings on Verve - Gerry Mulligan and The Concert Jazz Band "Live At The Village Vanguard" is the one most accessible currently, although there are others to be found on CD.
