THEIR LOVE IS DESTINED TO RISE AGAIN

Ailish Donovan is a witch ready to do battle. Raised unaware of her powers, she is just sixteen when her mother tricks her into binding with the demon Asmodeus. Pure-hearted Ailish escapes with the connection incomplete but pays a heavy price: For the next eight years, she is shunned by her earth sisters and tormented by Asmodeus’s lust. After hardening her body and mind as a champion kickboxer, Ailish returns home to break the bond—or die.

The Wing Slayer Hunter Phoenix Torq is sworn to protect earth witches, but he is shaken by Ailish’s fierce independence—and his own forbidden cravings. Dark, impulsive, and haunted by his troubled past, Phoenix likewise arouses Ailish in ways she finds disturbing—and irresistible. Torn between mistrust and desire, each must go to hell and back to seek the magic that could set them both free.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Lyon continues the Wing Slayers series (Blood Magic, Soul Magic) with a strong installment sure to please returning readers. Ailish Donovan was tricked by her mother, Maeve, into being handfasted with a demon at age 16. Shunned by Circle Witches because of the "witch karma" that left her blind, Ailish channeled her anger into a kickboxing career. Two weeks before her 24th birthday, when she must complete the bonding, Ailish plans to break the handfast or die. Phoenix Torq, one of the Wing Slayer Hunters, might be able to help, but he can't decide whether Ailish is good or evil. Meanwhile, Maeve and the demon Asmodeus resort to trickery, threats, and violence. Lyon peppers the love story with teasing humor and strong sexuality, though the beautiful imagery sometimes edges into purple territory. New readers face only a short learning curve and will finish the book enthused. (Apr.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical love story March 30, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of the Wing Slayer series but I have to say, Jennifer Lyon reached deep inside her characters and told a story that is both heart-wrenching and romantic. Phoenix Torq is a man who cannot walk away from from a woman in trouble. Ailish is a blind witch desperate to break the bond her mother, a rogue witch, tricked her into on her sixteenth birthday. These two are thrown together for better or worse. When a book touches me so much I cry, it automatically goes on my keeper shelf. But when a book makes me want to immediately go back to the beginning and reread it immediately, I know I've discovered something priceless. I own this book in Kindle edition and in paperback. If it came in hardback, I'd own that edition, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Night Magic April 12, 2011
By M. Nix
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ailish Donovan is a blind kick boxer and a witch. Years ago she entered into a contract with the demon Asmodeus, unknowingly. There are fourteen days left on her contract. The demon is doing his best to seduce Ailish. If he is successful in seducing her before the contract expires she will become a powerful demon witch and a slave to him forever. Ailish has come home to Glassbreakers, California to find a way to break her contract with the demon. She is willing to go to great lengths to break it. Ailish will not allow herself to become a tool for evil.

Phoenix Torq is a Wing Slayer Hunter. He lives to fight evil and save the innocent earth witches. His personal battle with bloodlust is getting harder to wage. Phoenix is haunted by his past but he's determined to overcome it. When he meets Ailish she evokes all kinds of lustful emotions but she also brings back some demons from his past. He sees her as vulnerable because of her blindness. She's just another person for him to take care of but she shows him she's not a wilting flower. He learns its best not to piss off a fierce independent warrior like Ailish.

The more Phoenix is around Ailish the more he falls for the fiery woman. Ailish doesn't want someone to save her because she is capable of saving herself. These two quickly discover that it will take them working together to fight the evil that is coming to destroy them all. Phoenix and Ailish will have to place their fate in each other's hands if they intend to rise from the ashes in Night Magic.

Phoenix and Ailish simple sizzle in Night Magic. These two set the world on fire with the passion that erupts between them. Night Magic's pages are filled with strong emotions and gripping suspense. Jennifer Lyon has created characters filled with such depth it's impossible not to identify with them. Phoenix is this strong indestructible slayer out to save the world yet he's filled with guilt and it eats at him affecting everything he does. The glimpses into his mind are intense and powerful. The feelings within Phoenix are set to a boil and they all bubble over when Ailish enters his life. His gut reaction may be `hell no' when he meets her but it's impossible to deny the connection between them. Ailish is also a strong character. It amazes me when I think about the fortitude within Ailish. She knows her situation is her fault and it's her responsibility to fix it. Ailish lost her sight in this evil battle and is willing to give her life to keep evil from gaining her power. Phoenix turns Ailish's world upside down. He makes her feel things like never before and she just doesn't know how to handle it. She has had one goal for so long she doesn't know how to do anything but fight.

Night Magic features some ultimate fighters. The Wing Slayer hunters along with Phoenix and Ailish will fight rogue slayers, demons, and demon witches. Both Phoenix and Ailish will have to fight their own internal demons to pave a way into each other's heart. Night Magic is absolutely worth the fight they endure. Night Magic is a beautiful, suspenseful romance with fascinating characters that take you on a thrilling roller coaster ride to the very last page.

Even though I still have a bit of a hard time with the overwhelming bloodlust (but no vampires) at the heart of Lyon's witch mythos which makes an unmated witch-hunter struggle not to kill a witch, I really did think that Night Magic was the best of Lyon's three Wing Slayer books to date and I ended up really liking the story once the hero forms enough of a connection to the heroine that he's not thinking of killing her everytime he's in her presence.

Both leads Phoenix and Ailish are good, with poignant back stories that have turned them into heroic people willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. Not only are they soul mirrors (soul mates and a familiar who have been fractured by a demon bargain and who are only whole if they are lucky enough to find each other and 'bond') but Lyon also ups their connection by weaving a legendary element into their story. They are also the legendary Phoenix and Siren and I really liked the destined bond which allows Ailish's song to reunite them and to call Phoenix back from the ashes life time after life time. I also liked that Ailish has found a loophole in the witches 'harm none' rede - after suffering the backlash of witch karma that left her blind as a teen, she's honed her fighting skills because a purely physical attack doesn't carry the tenfold reprecussions. And... I am such a sucker for a hero with wings, so the dangerous Phoenix wins even more points from me.

With the ending more than balancing out the roughness of the beginning of the story for me, I really did enjoy Night Magic, and since Lyon's also did a really good job of setting up her next leading man, who is tortured by dark visions, I am excited that there is only a month to wait before we get Key's story Sinful Magic: A Wing Slayer Novel.
