this is my favorite of the Xanth novels... Anthony's storytelling is at its best. he weaves all kinds of little twists and turns into the plot, and I was surprised at the ending. an excellent fantasy novel!

This work of fantasy is tremendously creative. It is consistently inventive and imaginative. Piers Anthony is a master of writing original fantasy. All of his Xanth novels exude creativity and inventiveness.

Piers has done it again! I have read all of his Xanth books up to this one. They are all good, but this one has more happening in it than the others! Mundane barbarian warriors think they've gone to war with a rival territory. Wrong! Well, they can't pull out now, so they decide to see if they can take over Xanth. A mysterious person keeps putting the kings in a trance and nobody know's how. It's up to a night mare to set Xanth back to the way it use to be!

Imbrium had lost her edge to scare. This might not seem so bad to us, but Imbri was a night mare, a bringer of bad dreams. It seemed that after acquiring half of a soul, her will to frighten had been shoved out. Also, her secret desire to see a rainbow didn't help much either. So her sire, the Night Stallion, retired her from dream duty for two reasons: her edge was lacking, and he had a mission for her. That mission was to save Xanth.

Three for the Price of One,
By Dylan Williams (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Night Mare (Paperback)
This is a great book to get, because it is actually three Xanth books in one. The first one, Centaur Aisle, is the fourth book in the series, and continues the mix of humorous puns, romance, and fantasy adventure as Dor is left in charge of Xanth as King Trent takes a "vacation" to Mundania (Earth). However, when the King goes missing, Dor must set out to find him, so he treks to the Southern most reaches of Xanth, the entrance to Mundania is of course to the North.Book 5 Ogre, Ogre is a endearing tale of an Ogre who goes out on a quest, but forgets what it was he was questing for near the start of his trek. Nothing to fear though, everything works out in the end. Book 6, Nightmare is a story about one "horses" dream to see the rainbow. Before she can though, she must save Xanth from the latest wave of Mundanians, Solve the problem of the disapearing Kings, and deal with the dastardly Horse man. All will be revealed by the end of the novel.

I have read all of the xanth books from number 1 right through to Night Mare in about 3 weeks. What started as a way to beat my depression after reading the crap that Jordan just wrote, has turned into a feeding frenzy. Anthony knows what fun is.

I'm a longtime Piers Anthony fan. When some of my earlier copies of his Xanth series began to become worn through multiple readings, I decided to order new copies for myself. However, it turns out that the publisher no longer produces this series with the same quality that they used to. The font is blurry and difficult to read; I ordered 4 new Xanth novels, and every one of them suffered the same problem.Disappointed, I contacted the publisher directly with my concerns. They instructed me to email them the UPC codes for each of the books, as well as some other information about each book. Then, they told me to ship the books to them via UPS and to include a copy of my shipping receipt in the package. They told me that I'd be sent a check to compensate me for the amount of the return shipping. A day after following the publisher's instructions, they've emailed me to tell me that the problem with the clarity of the books' text is the fault of the font they used; thus, they can do nothing for me except send me replacement copies of all 4 books that have the exact same problem.

Having read all of the earlier "Incarnations of Immortality" series I was anxious to find more books by Piers Anthony. "Night Mare did not live up to my expectations maybe this is just the weak link in the series (there is always one you must admit) and I will try the others. It seemed to me as if this book showed good promise but got bogged down trying to impress a younger audience.

Piers Anthony(also Pier Xanthony) writes a tale of a Night Mare, horses that deliver nightmares, that has a half a soul. She was supposed to bring it to her boss the Dark Horse but she didn't so he fired her. So Mare Imbrium, the sea of rains on the moon, starts an adventure to stop the evil Horseman from taking over Xanth. I thought this book was great and I couldn't put it down.
