Editorial Reviews

With Robin Williams at the cusp of what would become a very successful film career, A Night at the Met served as a kind of standup swan song for him. He had already made a considerable impression on the public, both as the lovable alien Mork and through his frenetically paced standup routines, but cocaine addiction threatened to derail his skyrocketing career -- the fuel for his fire was serving to burn him out as well. Cleansed of that addiction, A Night at the Met found Williams full of the same energy and maniacal pace that endeared him to his audience in the first place -- only, this time, the fuel was strictly internal. Overcoming addiction left Williams with a smorgasbord of hilarious and poignant material at his disposal and his wry and intelligent musings on the dangers of overindulgence held extra weight, because he had been there. Ruminations on drugs, relationships, and the Reagan administration were observationally dead-on and served up with a side of Williams' trademark, telling sentimentality. The sentimental and the hilarious reached a crescendo when the subject matter turned to the birth of his son. Among the pregnancy and pee jokes, Williams injected serious concerns for the future with a glimmer of hope that all might not be as dismal as it seemed. Hilarious, poignant, outrageous, and heartwarming, A Night at the Met came at a unique time -- capturing Robin Williams at both his career and personal best.

4.0 out of 5 stars You should have heard what they left out!, February 25, 2002
...

Robin Williams is flat-out insane on stage, and "A Night ..." does a fairly good job of catching his insanity. From riffs on Tom Landry directing "Swan Lake" ("take Giselle, throw her downfield ten, fifteen yards!") to getting busted with cocaine ("I'm okay, I'm okay, red, blue, red, blue--OH, ...) to fatherhood ("I expected three nomads to come into the delivery room--'we saw a star, dude?'"), only the most humor-resistant won't crack up. The only disappointment is that this wasn't a double CD, since Robin did about 2.5 hours at our show, a lot of which was even funnier than what appears here! Believe it or not, Robin only made three comedy albums--his first two, "Reality ... what a concept" and "Throbbing Python of Love" are long out of print. "Reality" is his funniest, but "A Night ..." isn't far behind. Yeah, he's now an Oscar-winning actor, but "A Night ..." reminds us that Robin Williams wasn't always so earnest ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Robin tells it like it is, July 7, 1999
Ever wonder what it would be like if someone told you the facts of life in the form of comedy? Well folks,it doesn't get any better than this! Great Quote: After seeing his child after his wife gave birth, "My God he's hung like a bear.." and the doc says... "...that's the umbilical cord Mr.Williams." Every time I listen it,I appreciate his honesty more!.."If you want ribs,go get barbecue." "A woman should be president, there would never be a war...just every 28 days,SEVERE NEGOTIATIONS."

5.0 out of 5 stars This man is a nut!, May 4, 2002

(REAL NAME)
I don't think Robin Williams does standup much anymore, as he has tried to be both an artist in both comedy and dramatic movies. However, after listening to Williams do his "A Night at the Met" concert in the late 1980's, I am convinced Robin Williams was one of the master of the stand-up comics. Johnny Carson once called him the man that would do anything and everything at any time. Most men would do their routine and be serious for the rest of the night on a talk show. Not Williams, as he would continue to entertain and do off the wall humor until everybody had almost died from laughter.

Williams can almost be described as "insane" on this album. He improvs for the first few minutes, and then launches into everything from alcohol and drugs, to President Reagan, and finally to sex. The man for almost an hour drives you crazy with his twisted humor. It is a shame he would rather do serious movies, but I guess he felt he needed to evolve. Still, if you want to see of Robin Williams as the craziest nut on the planet. You need to listen to this.
