One of the best CD i had for a long time.,
By Napoleon Solo (Ipanema, San Francisco) - See all my reviews this is one of Miller's best. the music is rich, with diversity and depth. from Miller's own Blast! to brasilian samba, from Miles to Jimmy Dorsey all interpreted with great intelligence. the orchestral backing by Philharmonic Monte Carlo adds dimension and richness of the overall presentation. i don't buy many CDs especially given today's economy. however, after listened to the entire CD at the shop twice, i decided to make some sacrifice and put down my hard earned $30. thanks to Victor which always delivers high quality jazz.

Star People,
This review is from: A Night in Monte Carlo (Audio CD)
The artistic genius of Marcus Miller sweeps through the nine tracks from the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival on November 29, 2008, which features his quartet and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, along with special guests Roy Hargrove (trumpet) and Raul Midón (vocals, guitar). The opening gems - "Blast!," "So What," "State of Mind," "I Loves You Porgy," "Amandla" - deliver the elements of funk, hip-hop and pop, with a strong vibe from Miles Davis lighting the stage. The closing superfecta of "I'm Glad There is You," "Medley: O Mio Babbino Caro/Mas Que Nada," "Your Amazing Grace" and "Strange Fruit" are built on orchestral textures that are enhanced by the sharp, studio-like mix and production. For nearly 40 years, Miller has been refining his work as a composer, arranger, producer and musician. This special performance brings renewed focus and appreciation to his amazing career.

Listen to this CD for a couple of months and prompted me to write a review. The collaboration of an orchestra with a incredible rhythm section satisfied the need of the mind/soul with a wave of some of the best music heard in quite a while. (Stanton Moore being an exception)I have turned on some people to this music and keep receiving thanks you's. Great stuff!

I'm a huge Marcus fan. I received advanced notice of this CD project which was recorded live in Monaco and now is released for our listening pleasure. Project starts with a great LIVE version of Blast...Marcus rips it!!!! Several other highlights is Raul Midon's vocal and guitar talent on State of Mind, Roy Hargrove's trumpet on the Miles Davis hit SO WHAT and Raul Midon singing to Marcus's Amazing Grace score....LOVE teh entire project!!!
