I was glad to see this book because Night Ranger transcriptions have been almost nonexistent. This book is immensely better than Hal Leonard's previous attempt with the Seven Wishes transcription book (mid-1980s and no longer in print), which was a compete abomination, in my opinion, with respect to delivering compete, marginally accurate transcriptions.
Best of Night Ranger leaves out several of the band's other popular tunes, but it does touch upon 10 of their 80s hits. Unfortunately, the two transcribers for the songs in the book apparently didn't complete their research on some of Gillis' and Watson's guitar playing and styles, as some of the published songs in this book seem a bit off, both in style and in missed or added notes. I own both of the Star Licks instructional videos (probably no longer available) of Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson demonstrating solo exerpts from some Night Ranger songs, and there are several instances where Best of Night Ranger falls short on accuracy with the recorded song versions. There is also some annotation on Jeff Watson solos to use a bar for note vibrato, and his guitars don't have tremolo bars, unlike Brad Gillis', who is famous for his whammy bar work. The book seems to be a bit of hit and miss in nailing down a song. Some of it is spot on; some not so much.
Best of Night Ranger isn't a bad book, and if you can overlook a few accuracy errors here and there, it's probably about as good as can be expected. I don't think that the book cover's statement of "authentic transcriptions" is completely valid. Considering the price at under $14, it is worth it for the good parts that ARE in there and price alone would probably bump the review up to four+ stars.
Here's one pointer: instead of playing the opening note to (You Can Still) Rock in America as written with a slack open 5th string brought up to pitch, play it by hitting double natural harmonics at the 7th fret on whammy bar slacked strings 4 and 5 and bring that up to pitch with some subtle vibrato after string tensions return to normal (seen on the Star Licks Brad Gillis video and Night Ranger concert footage).
