Editorial Reviews

Review

"Night Realm is a fantastic new take on vampires and I enjoyed every minute of it! I was ready for my next vampire fix and was going to pick up the next "Sookie Stackhouse" book when I came across Night Realm. A fantastic story that definitely kept me hooked." - Kym Hare (Undead Passion)

+I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author's writing is very detailed, which made this an easy to process read. It had a good amount of drama without trying too hard in a genre which, in my opinion, is the case a lot of the time.

+I felt attached to a few of the characters, which helped keep me emotionally invested in the story. I wanted to know what happens!

+Normally, I dislike books that constantly flip between points of view. But with Night Realm, I felt that each switch transitioned smoothly, thanks to the use of *** to differentiate. I found these switches easy to follow, & think it helped to make me so tied to the characters.

+I liked that it was set in Australia. Thanks to the author's descriptions, the landscape in which this was told was very beautiful, a great back drop.

-I did find a few grammatical mistakes, & a few times throughout, the sentences seemed a bit too short & choppy.

All in all, I give this a 4/5 star rating. Night Realm is a gripping novel that left me asking- is there going to be another book? I would recommend to vampire fans who like their fanged creatures on the non-sparkly side.

-Thank you to Darren G. Burton & Giveaways group for the free copy-

Read from June 17 to 20, 2013 -- I own a copy, read count: 1

Night Realm is a paranormal, young adult-ish book that incorporates a crime/detective story in too. The criminal side of the story was quite well researched and I thought it was believable, although not too intricately written. I would have liked to see more of that side of the story.

The paranormal side of the story leaves little to the imagination. It is much the same as any other vampire book, if you've read Twilight or Vampire Diaries you'll likely know just about everything there is to know about being a vampire in this book (alas - they don't sparkle).

The side stories and characters were flat, it was fairly obvious that they were created and introduced for the purpose of being killed or used in some way in the story. While the main character (Ryan) was fairly developed, his sister Chelsea, left quite a bit to be desired. Her thought processes seemed scattered and some of them completely out of character, or the character I created from my understanding of Darren's writing at least.

I had issues with the haphazard way in which Travis (Chelsea's mysterious boyfriend) was willing to do as Chelsea asked after such a short period in time of them being together. This 'Oh, I've just met you but I will die for you, you must be my soul mate' crap that's cropping up in young adult books these days is seriously insane!

Murder, romance and vampires, what more can you ask for? Ryan Fox is a private detective. He lives with his little sister Chelsea, but all is not loving in this family as she blames Ryan for the death of their parents. Ryan agrees to work a case for Selena Thorne, the owner of a nightclub, after meeting her during the course of another investigation. But Selena has secrets of her own to hide. In the meantime, Chelsea meets Travis, a mysterious newcomer to town. They both become enamoured with each other right away, but Travis has his own secrets that he quickly shares with Chelsea. In the meantime there are murders taking place all through Australia that have police baffled since the victims are drained of all their blood. How all these stories come together in the end you need to read on further to find out.

I really enjoyed this book. The romance was light, and the mystery of how these characters all fit together kept me going for some time until they all started melding together. The book also ended on a good note with an interesting twist. There is a sequel, but there was in no way any kind of cliffhanger which is refreshing in this world of cliffhanger sequels that seems to be flooding the marketplace lately.

Night Realm by Darren G. Burton is a detective/PNR book set in Australia where P.I. Ryan Fox is hired to retrieve research by a scientist who is working on an immunization against vampires. The mysterious woman who hires him also has a brother who becomes a love interest to Ryan's very angry and rebellious sister Chelsea. Detective Marks of the Homicide division is hot on the trail of a serial killer who leaves mutilated bodies all over Australia.

This was my first read from this author and while I did enjoy parts of this book there were parts that didn't come off. They were either too fantasical to ring true or just didn't come off well. Ryan's POV narrative seemed clipped and didn't flow well. Also way too much descriptive narrative concerning Ryan's showering and dressing details. Det. Mark's POV read very well and I really connected to his character, much more so than Ryan's. Ryan's relationship with his sister didn't get it for me either, he just seemed to blow her off again and again so it left me with no empathy of his view of her. The author did manage to surprise me with a couple of twists which is hard to do considering all the detective novels I have read in my life. I realy loved Mr. Burton's villians, they are nothing like what the usual fare is in PNR/UF these days. Its really hard to write pure evil and the author managed it very well. Chelsea did nothing but make me want to slap her silly and she seemed a little wooden at times. The ending however left something to be desired. It was too rushed and was confined to a few pages and wrapped up way too easily too fast. A few of the plot threads at the end didn't ring true for me. Such as, Selena not bothering to help Ryan outside of her house while he and the police were being attacked.
