5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic! But what a stimulating read., November 11, 2007

This review is from: A Night to Remember (Paperback)
Eve Vaughn's Night to Remember is graphic and not in a detailed way alone but with the explicit dialogue to go with it.

If that will bother you, don't get this book. It will indeed be a turn off.

Having said that, if you have read any of Ms. Vaughn's work you know she is not for the demure of sensibilities. She is raw and this book delivers in spades!!

Charlie Brown is 'celebrating' what should have been her second wedding anniversary with her husband Paul. But as a fireman Paul gave his life in service to save an elderly woman.

Jake Fox is suffering through a business meeting..when it is over he looks up to see a beautiful woman at the bar.

She has been talking to herself and looks miserable. He puts her drinks on his tab and leaves it at that when she walks out of the bar.

Charlie is in no position to drive, but rooms are thin on the ground because there is a convention in town; she is just about to leave to sleep in her car when she backs into the man from the bar. He heard the conversation she had been having with the hotel associate and offers her a place to stay, as his room has two beds.

Later he awakens to hear her crying and one thing leads to another....she leaves in the morning while he is showering and meets him again 3 years later.
I'll stop there as I have no wish to ruin the read for anyone else.

Now, if you have read Harlequin,and/or Mills and Boons, then you have read this book's set-up before: girl in distress, hottie hero to the rescue, girl flees and later meets hottie only now she has a heck of a secret.

What you haven't read is dialogue and sex scenes this real.
The dialogue and the sex are earthy, they are raw and they are hot.

Unlike several of the other reviewers I didn't see it as raunchy, more realistic, it is the stuff you babble when your eyes are rolling in the back of your head; the things you say when you feel as if you have been punched in the solar plexus; the conversations you have with your girlfriend(s) that make you want to say, "No! Did you really just say that?!" But you know she did because y'all have been friends forever and she can be counted on to tell you the truth.

This is what makes this book so awesome for me.

The pacing was excellent, the mood was perfect and the secondary characters made you feel you got the whole story: they added to, not detracted/distracted from, like a lot of the secondary characters can in an I/R book.

Know yourself and then be honest with what you like to read. When the publisher said graphic sex and language they meant it.
But if you are bold, this will be one of the best books you will have read in a while.

Enjoy!!

This review is from: A Night to Remember (Paperback)
On the night of her second anniversary with her late husband, Charlie just wants to drown her sorrows reminiscing about him in a strange bar. She's certainly not looking to meet anyone, much less than handsome Jake.

Jake is captivated by Charlie the moment he first sees her, and fate seems to throw her in his path with each moment. After sharing a night of unforgettable passion, Charlie disappears, unknowingly taking Jake's heart with her.

Three years later finds Charlie unexpectedly working for Jake's company. He's never forgotten her, and is all too ready to rekindle their passion. But will he forgive her when he discovers her long-held secrets?

Eve Vaughn has done a commendable job with character development and plot with her book A Night to Remember. At no time do the lead characters, Jake and Charlie, ever feel like strangers to the reader. The plot is well thought out, and the continuity is sound.

Where this story fails, in my opinion, is in the mechanics. Both the dialogue and the prose are, at times, stilted, reminding the reader they are reading a written story, rather than flowing so naturally you feel as if you are living the story. Add to that the grammatical errors, and the mechanics disrupt the story often, making it difficult to immerse oneself in the story. While not overrun with grammatical errors, they happened often enough to distract. More than once, the word `pursed' was used instead of the word `pursued'. The prose contained repeated, although not plentiful, sentences with clumsy structure.

On top of that, the love scenes came across as coarse and vulgar, instead of hot. While explicit language, when used properly, can be titillating, the language used between the two lovers in A Night to Remember doused what could have been some steamy scenes so that they were only tepid.

That said, Vaughn shows promise with this offering, and managed to move me to tears with two separate scenes towards the end of her book. I am hopeful that future publications by this author will refine the mechanics and allow us to concentrate solely on her story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding love again after the pain of loss!, July 20, 2007
This review is from: A Night to Remember (Paperback)
Charlie Brown suffered the loss of her husband on what should have been their first wedding anniversary. It's been a long lonely year since then. Rather than spend it alone of with people who would only feel sorry for her Charlie has chosen to drown her sorrows at a bar.

Jake Fox has spent the evening wining and dining potential clients and is thrilled when the meeting is finally over. Jake decides to stay and indulge in another drink as a reward for putting up with the members of the Banner group.

Jake notices Charlie the moment she enters the bar. In fact it's watching her that makes getting through his meeting bearable. When the bartender cuts off her alcohol, she learns that he's taken care of her bar tab but she's in no mood to be courteous and personally thank him, she asks the bartender to take care of that and she leaves and goes to a nearby hotel. All of the rooms are booked and with a convention in town so are the rooms in every motel in the area. Unexpectedly, Jake overhears her conversation with the desk clerk and he has a solution to her problem. He has a room with two double beds and he's willing to share. Sometime during the night he hears her crying and comforts her but their sexual attraction takes over and Charlie asks him to make love with her. The events result in an unplanned pregnancy.

Charlie disappeared from the hotel room while Jake was in the shower and hasn't seen or spoken to him since so he has no clue of what has transpired in her life. It isn't until three years later that fate brings them together again. How will Jake react to Charlie's sudden reappearance in his life? Will he be pleased that he's the father of a two-year-old little girl?

Even Vaughn's A NIGHT TO REMEMBER will have readers experiencing a vast array of emotions. Charlie's an easy character to empathize with - she's a strong woman who's been through a devastating loss but getting through it the best way she can. Jake is a genuinely likeable character. I loved how he was wiling to comfort Charlie when he learns of her loss and he didn't try to take advantage of her. I could hardly wait for his reaction to learning that she carried and gave birth to his daughter without telling him. There's no shortage of sexual tension between Jake and Charlie, but there's a world of emotions and hurt stemming from the past that they'll both have to find a way to get through. Eve Vaughn writes passionate tales that leave readers with a sense of well being, hope and anxiously awaiting her next contribution to the literary world.
