Under Rated Star,
By Cliff (Canton, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
Joe Diffie is the most under rated male country singer today. He may not be real flashy, but few can come close to matching his great voice. If you don't own any of his CDs, get this one, I'll bet you will order his others after you hear it. Try to catch Joe live too, his show is great!

An album to remember,
By R.A.M. Verheyden (huubpee@wish.net) (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
I bought this album for the title track. Because country isn't that big in Europe, I have to pay 20 dollars or more for an album (record companies don't see a market for country here, so they don't release country singles). So instead of just buying the CD-single, I get a better value-for-money if I buy the entire album through Amazon. I ordered it with a batch of other country albums (Steve Wariner, Ty Herndon and Brad Paisley), and I really didn't have high hopes about this one (bar the title track). I must say that after hearing them all through, I found this album to be the best of the bunch. By now you'll probably have guessed I like "A night to remember", but there are many more good songs on it. "I'm the only thing I'll hold against you" is one such track. I can't understand the lyrics though: the title implies anger about a cheating lover and it starts out that way in the first verse. Then he forgives her and takes her back, taking part of the blame himself! Talk about love, but this makes the story a bit unbelievable. "The quittin' kind", the new single, has a great guitar riff which livens up the song (and the album). The next track "Better off gone" starts off too slow, but the great chorus makes up for this. Another great song is "It's always something", which is one of my favourites. Are you still with me? Okay, next highlight is "Are we even yet?", about two lovers who constantly keep making each other's lives miserable just for the fun of it. Last of the good ones is the very cynical "Don't our love look natural?", which is somewhat ruined by a country growl in the line "It faded in its prime". A tiny bit over the top. Only drawback: at just over 34 minutes, the album is too short. I know vinyl is still big in the States, but even an LP can hold more music than that!

A good mix of Country with a few great upbeat songs,
By A Customer
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
I dont know what the reviewer was thinking when he said a 'couple' of good songs. I rarely find a CD in which I could enjoy 9 out of 10 songs on the first listen, unless of course its a greatest hits album. I bet at least 2 other songs will be on CMT or across the radio waves after "A Night to Remember". One of them is track 4 "The Quittin' Kind' which is an excellent upbeat song. The other is track 5 "Better off gone" which is a slower song that picks up on the chorus, really making it great. This is my first review because I really dont like to take the time for this, but I just HAD to back this CD because its obvious Joe Diffie put a lot of work into this one.

A quality output for Joe, but I miss the fun.,

A couple of points I would like to make. First, the reviewer for Amazon is grossly misinformed if he thinks Joe Diffie doesn't have a distinctive voice. Diffie is one of the more distinctive voices on country radio. Second, This album is a quality piece of work, however, I am somewhat disappointed by the lack of just FUN songs. After Joe's first few albums (through 3rd Rock), Joe has blanded out somewhat. Some of Joe's most loved and sung songs are those that are just flat out fun. For example; John Deere Green, Pick-up Man, and 3rd Rock from the Sun. This album really doesen't have any of these, but Joe has picked some quality songs nonetheless. If Joe had to do a serious album, I must say he did an excellent job on this one. Here's to hopeing that Joe puts a couple of fun songs on his next album.

AN ALBUM TO REMEMBER,
By Christopher Rolen (rolenincountry@webtv.net) (East Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
When the kiddy-country acts of today are in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart........When David Kersh and Shania Twain lose all their teenage fans............there will still be a voice that will ring TRADITION!!!!!!!!!!! That voice belongs to JOE DIFFIE!!!!!!I have purchased every one of Joe's CDs, and I've yet to be unimpressed! His voice has always been on the traditional side of the fence, even if his music has pushed the envelope. "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER", Diffie's 9th album with EPIC RECORDS, is a a Godsend!!!!!! From the writing team of MAX T. BARNES and T.W. HALE, we have recieved the title cut; "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER"! As usual, Diffie creates a dark and depressing setting of a man filled with hurt and memories. When you first listento the song, you think the character is going out on the town, but when the chorus hits, you know that he's going to drown himself in the past. If this song doesn't hit #1, the radio stations in America are filled with fools!!!!! This song is Diffie's crowning achievement!Joe had always had a hand in writing his own material, and this time, he co-wrote 4 songs on the album: "YOU CAN'T GO HOME. ARE WE EVEN YET, and MY HEAR'S IN OVER MY HEAD"!"I'M THE ONLY THING I'LL HOLD AGAINST YOU", the 4th, was written for the late-great CONWAY TWITTY. This was one of Conway's last charted singles before his death in June of 1993. Joe does this song justice, without surpassing Conway!!!! If you're into the catchy, tounge-in-cheek-novelty-songs that Diffie is know for, there are none on this cd. The closest that he comes to that is "IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING". The song, written by MARV GREEN and AIMEE MAYO, is absolutely fantastic!!! The song, a tale of a man that just can't lose his ex's memory, is unforgettable!!!! {IT'S ALWAYS SOMETING, EVERYWHERE REMINDING ME. EVERYWHERE I GO THERE'S A MEMORY. READY AND WAITING TO CATCH ME OFF GAURD. THERE'S NO WAY TO PREPARE MY HEART} From that line, you can see that this song is going to be a classic! My only question is; where has Diffie been hiding these songs?????One of my favorite cuts on this album is "BETTER OFF GONE" (written by Lonnie Wilson and Zack Turner {of the group Turner Nichols})! This is one of the most unusaul songs that I've ever heard. I can't describe it to you, so you'll just have to hear it for yourself!!!If I were to use two words to describe this album, I'd have to say: "LONG OVERDUE"!!!!I have waited for 5 years to hear Diffie sing with his heart!!!! This time, he has.

His best yet!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
I believe this album is his best work to date, due to the fact that so much has changed in his life in the past couple of years and it is really reflected with the songs on here. There's not an artist in country music who can match Joe's vocal ablilties on "Better Off Gone" and "I'm The Only Thing I'll Hold Against You." For those fans who are into music with substance, this is a wonderful album.

Pretty good comeback,
This review is from: Night To Remember (Audio CD)
This was a pretty big comeback album for Joe Diffie after a couple of commercial failures. It's pretty serious compared to his earlier, more humorus releases. It has some great songs like the title track, 'It's Always Somethin', 'I'm The OnlyThing I'll Hold Against You', 'Better Off Gone' and the more upbeat 'The Quittin Kind' The rest of the songs are pretty average.
This is not a perfect album, only half of it is really memorable, but the songs that are memorable make it worth owning.

Great Music,

In my opinion, Joe Diffie is one of the best country singers around and very unappreciated and unrecognized for his singing and talent. He is has a wonderful voice and knows good music. Only the best and most talented singers and song writers can produce serious and fun music with great quality. Joe Diffie is great at this. This album shows what a big range of his singing and talent abilities are. I love the whole album and highly recommend it to any country music fans. "A Night To Remember" is an album you will want to remember for sure.

I bought this CD on a whim because I had heard the title track and was intrigued by Joe's voice. Little did I know that I would be buying a CD that plays continuously in my car, at my house and at work. It has a party side to it with the ever upbeat, roll down your windows and turn the volume up "The Quittin' Kind" and the also upbeat but a little less feel good heartbreaker "It's Always Somethin'" and then it has its sensitive side with "A Night to Remember" and the heartfelt "I'm The Only Thing I'll Hold Against You". It's an all-around great CD from a star who deserves a little more attention than he receives.

Meaningful, much depth & passionate...,

I have always admired Joe Diffie but with this new album, he absolutly blew me away. He is very versitle in his range which tells me that he can do anything with his voice. I am glad to see him make an album that steared away from the more humorous songs (which are wonderful also) and gear more towards the powerful ballads that are so passionate. I was glad to see that he also had a hand in writing several of the songs on this album. He must enjoy life, love and everydayexperiences to sing so beautifully. He impresses me more with each new album but this one in my opinion is by far the best yet. I admire him very much as an artist and a person. |
