Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Christine Helstrum, killer of her son and his adoptive mother, escapes from an asylum and torments the man whom she widowed, his new wife and son, who find beheaded mice and broken latches in their home. A "comfortably domestic suspense thriller," said PW , although the "teasing details lose their terror for readers, who are kept abreast of Christine's whereabouts and plans."

From School Library Journal

A gripping suspense story that's a real page-turner. The insane killer of Alex's first wife and child has escaped and is now stalking Alex, his new wife Sarah, and their son Brian. Their partially renovated old home becomes the scene of many unexplained events as the story races through several encounters with the psychopathic Christine. Some scenes, such as one on a roof, may seem vaguely familiar to readers, and extraneous descriptions seem calculated to fill pages. However, the characters are well developed, and Brian is a particularly likable child. This is a thriller, but it's not comparable to books by Mary Higgins Clark. --Paula Wilde, R. E. 5.0 out of 5 stars AN OLD FAVORITE!, August 2, 2005
This review is from: Night of Reunion (Paperback)
When I was 13, this book was released. It was 1991, and a snowy December night...Later that night the power went out...it stayed out for days, as the snow piled up to 3 feet over the next 4 days...I ahd NO TV!!! I read this book so easily...and it terrified me, every night by candlelight...thinking about that woman in the shadows...hiding...call it what you will, but it is a great winter-time novel...espeacially on a cozy ski trip...preferrably when you are by yourself...monitor the shadows, though...might there be someone IN your house? This thought alone makes my skin crawl...and isn't so unreal a situation...what was that noise I just heard?

3.0 out of 5 stars BLOODY REUNION, March 6, 2004
This review is from: Night of Reunion (Paperback)
NIGHT OF REUNION is one of those early 90s novels, where women were just starting to emerge in the role of the activist, rather than the passivist. Sarah Whitaker has recently married Alex, a strong, stable high school teacher; Sarah herself is a beautician, co-owner of her own shop; they have a son, Brian, a precocious six year old. However, this is Alex's second marriage; his first ended violently when madwoman Christine Halstrum murdered his wife and adopted son. Christine is the natural mother, of course, and she wanted her baby back. Christine was apprehended, and committed to a mental institution. Now, four years later, Christine has escaped and wants her revenge.
Allegretto does a nice job in creating characters you can feel for and with, but his meandering pace tempers the suspense, although there is a nifty ending on the roof of the Whitaker home.
An enjoyable read, not too gory, or sex-driven; family kind of murder!
Cozy up by the fireplace and enjoy.
