5.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up for G. Bugatti and Night for Romance, October 21, 2003

This review is from: A Night for Romance (Audio CD)
I believe that this is George Bugatti's third CD, and it is easily his best. And this is saying a lot since the first two are as worthy and deserving of praise as any pop standard recordings in recent memory. I know Mr. Bugatti from his piano playing and singing at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, and from his appearances at the Belagio Hotel in Las Vegas. I was wondering when this talented guy was going to break out. This latest CD is the perfect showcase for what Mr. Bugatti does best. That is, to find the essential truth of a song, then make it his own while remaining faithful to it's essential truth. This is no mean accomplishment when the song is part of your backround consciousness, and almost inseparably associated with Frank, or Tony, or Ella, or Nat, or Sarah, or Mel. But Mr. Bugatti is a first class song stylist. He is neither intimidated by his predecessors, nor is he mannered and affected. This guy is authentic and original. The first song on the CD, Bobby Troup's "Girl Talk," for example, is filed away in my head next to Jack Jones and next to Mrs. Bobby Troup, Julie London. I never thought anyone else could come near this song. But Mr. Bugatti gets inside the tricky rhythm and phrases and shapes the song in his own unique way. He gets the subtle and not so subtle humor. This is a guy speaking to a guy song. (Sorry Dianna) It is about our endless fascination with life's most inscrutable mystery, and our ultimate submission to it's [her] power without ever having understood a thing. Mr. Bugatti gets it. It is about the words. It is always about the words. I also want to single out "But Beautiful," and "They Say That Falling in Love is Wonerderful" and "Indian Summer" for my highest praises. If you ever have the chance to see Mr. Bugatti in person, don't miss it.
